  • craftsmen or cheap

Hay guys i have a question for all of you real quick. I'm going to buy me a timing light today but I cant chose here. I found a craftsman timing light on cl for 15 dollars and the web says it was a 100 dollar light back in the day and i also found a light at harbor freight for 15 dollars brand new never used. What do all of you think i should do? Buy old and hope it works for a long time or buy new and hope it works for a long time (dame china made crap).

Which ever one you decide on, make sure it is the type that clips OVER the plug wire. The old timing lights required that you pull a plug wire and actually plug it into the timing light. You had to shut the engine off with the old style or risk getting shocked. The new clip over type can be connected and disconnected without having to start and stop the engine. If both lights have the clip over type connection, I would go with the used Craftsman. My first timing light was a used one from one of the major tool companies (Snap-On or Mac, I think) and it lasted for years.
    You gonna race that thing?

if your a mechanic go with the craftsman if not go with the harbor freight so you don have to pay shipping. thats just my opinion, i dont mind harbor freight i have bought many-a-tool there so far including my cherry picker and havnt had anything break yet. i do however have a very nice set of dewalt power tools which i wouldnt trade for the world because i do manual labor and need the very sturdy tools.

I've seen the $15 Harbor Freight light, it's pretty cheap. They do have an upgraded light with adjustable advance for like $30 that looks pretty fair. The Craftsman would be 10X the quality, as long as it still works. I will say, I have quite a few Harbor Freight tools and have not had any issues as of yet. I don't use them much or very hard, but for the occasional use I have been satisfied. A good friend bought an air powered framing nailer from Harbor Freight to finish his basement. He used it with no issues. Then his cousin, who is a spec-home builder, borrowed it in a pinch and ended up using it for several months before returning it. Then my friend moved into a 5 BR two story house that was trashed. He completely gutted it and remodeled the whole thing. The nailer still works with no issues. Hard to complain about that.

I've got one like this, bought it new in the early 1980's . Paid around $65.00 for it and it has never failed to work. Great product.
