  • Reading the fuel meter....

Since we have a 10 gallon tank, is it safe to say that the 5 marks on our fuel gauges represents 2 gallons each?

Just wanted to make sure since I drove from Providence to Boston and back tonight with a full tank and ended up with half gone.

Boston is roughly 45 miles away. If how I'm reading the gauge is right, then it means I just burned 5 gallons in 90 miles. This isn't normal is it?

No, from full to half tank uses approximately 2/3 of a tank in my experience with many vehicles including festivas.

Well at the halfway mark, I pay for 5 gallons and it fills it up to full.

That sounds horrible. How about a stand alone fuel management system

All festiva meters are different in my experience, sometimes even the same one can be different from one day to the next . I love the tach clusters but can't stand the tiny and finicky (sp?) temp and fuel gauges down at the bottom... thats one of the reasons why I made this

Best of both worlds, the non-tach (bigger) fuel and temp gauges are much more accurate (or at least easier to read) in my opinion.

the fuel reading is not linear- as in 3/4 needle doesn't mean 3/4 tank, likewise for 1/2 and 1/4..... the fuel sending unit in the tank has a float on it that doesn't move as much from an actual full tank to 3/4 as it does from 1/2 to 1/4... again, its about the pivot point of that sender, and isn't linear...

Yeah, though my gauge peev was more with the temp gauge than the fuel gauge. I know my gas mileage and usually track fuel that way more than the gauge and always fill up to the top when I should be at about 1/4 tank, then just hit the trip and start the countdown again But I like having a bigger temp gauge for sure compared to the little tach cluster ones with almost a whopping half inch of travel from one end of normal to the other

The thing I notice with my fuel reader is that when I take a corner hard, the fuel meter either reads down or up depending on which direction I take. Really weird. Is there a digital fuel reader out on the market that shows how many gallons I have left like in the newer cars?

That's because the fuel is sloshing to one side and causes the float to move. I've never owned a car where the fuel gauge reads exact from full to empty. I would suppose you could make a gauge that would read gallons. You would have to have a processor that would convert the ohms readings from the sending unit to the digital gauge.
