  • Donut Spare Rim Question

Can I mount a full size tire on the Festiva donut rim?

  • #2
    Why?

You can fit a full size spare in the spare tire hole...

There may be a reason you shouldn't do this, but I don't know of any. I think the limitations of the doughnut spares (no more than 50 miles at under 55 mph or something like that) were due to the tire part, not the wheel itself. I could be wrong.

      I went out and looked at a Festiva spare. It's a "4T X 13" steel wheel with a 105/80 tire on it.

I suppose you could put your own tire on if the tire was skinny enough to match the rim width. Since the rim is 4 inches wide, I'd keep the tire to a 155mm or thinner. You still may be able to order 145/80-13 size tires or even 135/80s. The most commonly available size which *might* work is the 155/80-13. I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with that size though. I'd prefer the 145/80.

Consult a big, knowledgeable tire store or expert before you do this! It still may not be safe. Perhaps the steel wheel is not meant for sustained speeds in excess of 55. On the other hand, if you're doing this for fuel economy, you don't want to go past 55 anyway!

      Be careful!

I'm buying a new set of 12" tires and thought I would mount one of the old ones on the donut rim. (Don't have an extra full size rim).
Didn't notice that the spare rim was 13". (Would have found out when I tried to do this.)
I'll just get rid of the spare rim.
Thanks for spelling it all out for me Karl.
