i feel silly asking this question but is the 1.9 motor in a 90s ford escort a mazda motor or a ford motor? i was doing some reading and it said there was a differnce in a car built in america or europe.

It's a very durable efficient ford designed motor.

I just sold one for $2000 running perfectly with 135k. A friend has one with 275k on the original engine. feoa.net is where you go for info.

Got a friend with one (escort w/1.9) right now and he's lovin on it. Does say it's dependable. That being said, it sho ain't no BP ( 1.8 ) either.
As far a performance goes it's considered to be, well, anemic at best, but I realize that may not be your priority. I want to say 110hp or less for the 1.9 as compared with like 125-127 for the 1.8...someone correct me if I'm wrong!?

Bout a month ago paul and i defended the 1.9 in another thread. If you get a free escort that feoa.net can link you to information on how to help it with a 2003 2.0 focus head so it won't drop a valve and then a turbo kit...but again it's all not festiva-able.

I think I read 95 ish hp. It feels a lot more tourquey than a festiva but it does NOT like to wind out. It was very comfortable and refined even on the highway.

Try comparing the 2.0 ztec to the 2.0 spi focus engine. Seat of the pants you cant tell a difference around town or WOT until about 4000 rpm. Family has owned both.
