  • 4 speeds, good for anything.

I have two Festy four speeds, known good, is there anything inside these tranys that would influense me to keep them instead of sending them to the scrap yard.

Sure they are good for a backup. If you have one extra you should look for the guys swapping to a manual trans especially if you have extra starters too

    1993 GL 5 speed

It's a MazdaFordnKia thing, and you will understand!

I offered to sell one of the trans to a member for $35 + the ride but didn't get an answer and thats OK things change. i have a couple five speeds as spares so no need to keep the others.

Thanks for the tip Arty, i'll get The Festiva car shop manual out and see whats needed to disassemble the trans, any tips on an easy how to or is it that you split the case and you just know from there.

Yup, I just did, it's a good idea to replace the clutch at the same time though.

and if you prefer better acceleration, you can swap in an aspire 5 spd. (must use aspire trans mounts).

Can you take a good 4 speed crack it open and add the 5th gear parts to it?

5th gear is most likely on the outside portion of the trans, which would require a longer shaft and end case that's 5 speed specific. Not 100% on this for a festiva.

So if you broke a case for some reason, the five speed mainshaft and all that jazz could be swapped in?
1992 white L, Bp, American racing 13's, stock trans.
1991 White L, BP/F5MR, protege header, full aspire swap with gr2's, seats, and sway bar, 15" konig's, short throw, escort console.
                        1991 blue L, 5 speed.

not at all, 4 and 5 spd cases are the same, 4 speed has a dead gear for a spacer on the shaft.

I wonder if you can get a custom 5th gear made up or shave down a gear off something else to fit. With the larger 1.8 displacements dropping down to a .70-.65 5th gear would be some really long legs on the highway. iceracerdude would be the one to ask this sort of thing because he knows our e series tranny better than i know how to take apart a bike.
