  • What cylinder head is this?

I was cruising Ebay and ran across this. What the heck is it?? BJ? ZJ? I thought it was kind of odd that the seller is in Utah but it doesn't look like any US domestic market 1.3 Mazda cylinder head that I've seen.

I wish the pics showed some casting numbers. If you look at the bottom right hand side of the pic displaying the topside of the head someone has written "Mazda 1.3L" on the valve cover rail. I know that's not worth much though LOL

havent seen one taken apart but it might be the protege 1.5 dohc that festyfreak removed to do his frankenstiva engine. He said it has one gear controlling 2 cams. The japanese 1.3 DOHC has a timing cover that looks just like a b6d so that wouldnt be it either.

^^ What year Z5? The last Z5 I worked on was in a 98 Protege and it had 2 cam gears.

^^ You're right, the book shows there is a Z5 with a short chain that drives both cams like on a 4.6 Cobra motor. I was just curious what it came in.

Or was that the difference between a DX and LX? Both came with a 1.5 but now I'm wondering if it's the same 1.5 since there seems to be 2 different versions. The car I worked on was an LX.

Ok, I've thoroughly derailed my own thread now

I saw that awhile back and assumed he had gotten ahold of a JDM BJ head.

The tall ridge on the left side looks weird to me though.

that tall ridge is for a single cam sprocket. i know of no mazda 4 cyl that has that cam drive system.

I thought about buying it, but I figured parts and gaskets for a JDM DOHC 1.3 might be problematical to get, so it wasn't too much thought.

Glad I thought that way anyhow! Imagine all the problems I would have had trying to fit that onto a B3 block!

If it was a JDM 1.3 twin cam head it would go on a B6 block anyway. And you'd need different rods and crank to build a true JDM BJ engine. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the BJ basically a destroked B6-ZE?
