  • Engine Swapping Questions

    Hello all,
Im relatively new to Festiva modifications therefore I have a few questions that hopefully can be answered.
Im in search of making my festy go faster basically. Ive read many threads but still confused about the different engines that can go in the car.
In respect to my mechanical knowledge, ive worked on my festy as much as possible, do tune ups, suspension ( such as change shocks, brakes, and clutch. ) anything that doesn't have to do with taking the engine apart, but have buddies that can.

My biggest confusion, is the differences with the engines and the ease to swap.
For instance, from my understanding there's"
    -4 B6 engines- B6 8v, B6 SOHC, B6 DOHC, B6t
    - B8
    - Bp, Bpt

From my understanding, the b6 sohc is the most powerful stock engine i can put in the festy without altering/ manufacturing passenger side motor mount. TO be honest i wouldn't know where to start in making a motor mount for the dohc or bp, b8, ect. My one of my question is how difficult is it to put in the dohc and bp. Any other issues or modifications i would have to deal with other than the motor mount? Now if i were to stick with the b6 sohc are there any performance options or upgrades?

Welcome to the site! Please include your location in your profile. Go to User CP/Your Profile/Edit Your Details/Additional Information. Might be someone near you who can help.

    For clarification:
B6 8v and B6 SOHC are the same engine. It's an 8-valve SOHC. Perhaps you were confused because people refer to it in different ways, to differentiate it from the B6D (B6 DOHC).

I have the stock gen 2 B6 SOHC and 14 degrees of timing advance and a cat-delete pipe. It's very peppy, and the stock Festy clutch should be fine with it (my clutch is slightly upgraded).

Others can better advise you on how hard it is to install the other motors.

Not necessarilly. There is also a B6 SOHC 16 valve. Not sure what all it came in, but its on the B series info page. Pretty rare I think, might have been in some 323s and some Cali cars for emissions standards, but its out there, I saw one at a yard once.
      No festiva for me ATM...

        B6 SOHC 16V = B6ME
Mostly came in the MX3 I believe.

If you can find a good first gen B6, it would be the easiest to swap. Basically the same as the original B3 and a bolt-in. You could even re-use the B3 exhaust & intake manifolds if you want, but performance will suffer. You would gain about 20hp, which is not neck-snapping but it makes for a much funner & safer to drive and still great on gas. The 2nd Gen B6 has a slightly different head port design, so you would have to use the intake & exhaust manifolds that came on the engine. That would require some minor adapting, but the 2nd gen is probably easier to find in good condition. Not much aftermarket performance upgrades readily available for the B6......tube headers are like Hen's teeth, but you can still get a performance camshaft from Festiva Motorsports (maybe ?).

Ah, didn't know about that one, thanks. Pretty rare compared to the 323 B6's I suppose.

Quite the opposite where i live actually. The B6-2E (the 16v sohc variant) is extremely common as MX3's here were of a much higher sales volume than the 323 ever was. I have yet in fact to cross more than one or two 323's ever in a junkyard here in MN compared to easily hundreds of MX3's over the years.

I did have a good write-up about all the different engine options, but it may have been a very very long time ago and has probably been lost

Hey guys, I'm thinking of swapping in a B6-ME, 16 valve SOHC variant of the B6. I believe it came from a 93 MX-3. I have a 93 Festiva and I'm hoping that I can just bolt this motor in. Does anyone know if the B6-ME exhaust manifold will match up with the stock Festiva exhaust? Will it run safely with the Festiva intake manifold, VAF and ECU and possibly exhaust manifold?
