  • Aspire speedo gear in a festy?

I was wondering if I upgraded to 13" rims of some sort with the same tire size as an aspire, would an aspire speedometer gear swap make the gauge accurate again, or are they the same? This would likely be combined with an aspire swap, but perhaps not. Either way, it probably wouldn't make a difference.

Also, if I ended up doing a BP swap with a G-series, would the speedo be accurate if I put a rim/ tire combo on my car identical to the car the tranny came from? Does the G-series have more aftermarket support for speedo gears for different rim sizes?

    Thanks.

Seems to me like the speedometer in the cluster would be vehicle specific instead of the gear inside of the trans. Could be though, just a thought!

The speedo gear's size is directly proportional to the wheel size. The festiva gear is set to 12" wheels, and ford made no other sizes for it. The aspire's gear is sized for 13" wheels, but I'm not sure if it will work in a festy.

The Aspire and Festy got the same F3A auto transmission (Aspire got a lock up torque converter) so I don't see why not at least for the auto.

Well, this is for a 5-speed manual, but I'll keep that in mind.

Edit- have you been anywhere near Grand Rapids lately? I saw a festy in my neighborhood last week that looked just like the one in your avatar...

My camera is out on loan so I am unable to submit comparison shots. I too was thinking an Aspire speedo (the gear business that goes into the transmission) would work in a Festy. Auto and Manual Festy speedo gear units are interchangeable (done one of those before) The idea of an Aspire unit is grand and the nylon gear wheel even has 10% fewer teeth (ie fewer turns per mile), but in comparing the two directly there is no way of attempting a swap. The entire gear unit is considerable longer on the Aspire (ie 1/2 inch) and the similar-looking nylon gear wheel itself (if you could simply liberate that part and swap it onto the Festy unit) has thicker and a less helical pattern teeth. Don't imagine this would be long-lived if you could force it into a Festy transmission.
I guess if speedo accuracy is paramount than swapping an Aspire transmission would be in the cards at the same time you did the suspension swap.
