Liberator of oil company greed. "SUNCAR" is a 1988 Ford Festiva converted into an all electric vehicle. She is powered by a 30 hp DC electric motor mounted to the original 5-speed trans axle so you still go through the gears. She gets her power from 8 six volt Trojan golf cart batteries, making her a 48 volt car. She has supplemental charging by way of 4 roof mounted solar panels generating 60 watts total. We eliminated the weak link in most EV's which is the controller or speed control unit as these tend to burn out and at $500 each, can get expensive. As a result, this car has seen trouble free service for over 5 years and has proven to be a great little work horse.
Specs:
Power - 48 Volt DC
Motor - 30hp DC motor
8ea. 6 volt Trojan batteries for propulsion
1ea. 12 volt battery for systems (wipers, lights, radio etc...)
4ea. 15 watt Amorphous solar panels - to charge propulsion batteries
1Ea.135 mA solar panel - to charge system battery
New low roll resistant tires
New struts
On board 3 phase charger
Range with current (5 year old) batteries - 12 miles
Range with new batteries - 22 miles
Top speed 50 MPH
Charging time - about 8 hours
Cost to completely charge from empty - less than $1 (off peak - meaning, charge it at night)
