    Checking Your Festie Ball Joints
.... The other day I went for my annual State Car Inspection. It's been one year now since the car 88 has been reactivated after sitting for approximately twelve years and now has over 482,000 miles and is running like a top. I know the inspector and we did the usual checks and I received my 2012 window sticker. During the conversation he asked me if I checked the Ball Joints and I told him I had and everything was tight including the tie rod ends as well.
.... Long story short he told me I needed to check them Vertically and NOT so much Horizontally. So I put the car back on the lift and pulled and push and prodded to try to get any kind of play or movement and nothing. Those Ball Joints are as solid as can be. Even the inspector said to me " your going to have some play" but there just wasn't any. We both were a little surprised in view of the mileage.
.... With our Festies getting older (in my case 23 years) it would be a concern for others as well as myself, I would think, and that is why I am sharing this experience.
.... This is a subject you don't hear too much about and would be interested in the experiences of others or suggestions or what ever and maybe even a different approach to checking? ccasion8:

horizontal play is tie rod ends, and vertical is ball joints. neither of which are much fun to do lol

If they're original, that's really amazing!

I'm seeing that you put your car up and did a proper check.

Checking the ball joints is VERY important and it has been talked about here once in a while. Several members have had "close calls" when one let go and their wheel tucked under, etc.

Tie rod ends are just as important, I had one let go on my mom's escort wagon. luckily I was leaving a parking lot and I was able to limp off to the side. you can't steer too well in that situation either. lol
