So when I grabbed a b8 from the junkyard yesterday I also grabbed a nice turbo. Its a garret from a Volvo 760. Only drawback is it had coolant lines going to it also. I took it apart last night, cleaned it and turned the housings so it will line up nice. Anyone have any experience with water cooled turbos? Can I plug the holes? It has an internal wastegate and I read some on the web and it sounds as if its set at 7 psi.

I wouldn't delete the water cooling. You're asking for early bearing failure. Just route one of the heater hoses thru it.Jim DeAngelis

I have used those turbos before without water cooling ( you don't even have to plug the lines if you don't want to as it makes no difference) and beat them like a junkyard turbo should be beat with no problems. Synthetic oil and not shutting the engine off right after running it hard keeps it from grenading. I think that's a 50 trim t3, they match well with1.8 liter engine.Driving for me is neither a right nor a privilege. ^^^ hmmm... ok then!
I was going off of what a Honeywell rep told me. Talked with those guys alot when I was handling VGT failures on the VT365/Powerstroke 6.0L. She said they have tried both with and without water cooling, and found a significant difference in bearing durability. She said without water cooling, the turbos had a tendency to coke the oil after shutdown. I know this was a major concern on the VGTs, as far back as the Mopar Turbo Is and IIs in the 80's. I guess its not as big a problem on fixed geometry units.Jim DeAngelis

If it's a water cooled turbo, I'd route some water through it. It's really not that difficult, the B8 block should be tapped for it like the BP block is

I wasn't saying DON'T do it. If mine were under the hood I would have it hooked up.
My setup does NOT require as much cooling as others.
Rear turbo FTW again....-Greg
