  • A new addition to my family...

Going Friday to pick up a 1996 Subaru Impreza. AWD 5 speed 1.8. got it for 600 bucks and it just needs the timing belt replaced. Guy drove it daily and one day it snapped the belt and he stopped driving it. Has a new jet black paint job but wasnt wet sanded afterwords. Not a big deal, shouldn't be to hard to get it back to its shine. Will post some pictures up when I go and pick it up.

Almost forgot about this thread. I got her home. Took from 9:00am til about 5pm to get it 40 miles home. It was a hell of a adventure to say the least. I was only told it justed needed a timing belt put on it and it would drive home. haha ya right, there was more to it then that. Im going out to clean it up alittle. I will get more pictures and continue on with the bad part of the story...

Here is some pics. Sorry they are night time pics. I have been working on it most of the day trying to get it cleaned up. The PO didnt take care of this gem so now I must try and shine it back up.

Had to cover the seats They are in horrible shape.

Anyways back to the bad part of the story. Me and daniel, my brother, showed up to install the timing belt on the car. The seller wasnt there so we waited. He finally shows and is in a rush to get this car out of the garage. Me and daniel helped roll the car out and as soon as we did the guy closes the door and I ask him if he wants the money now. He says yes and as soon as I counted out the 600 he hands me the title and leaves, like quickly leaves. I kinda thought to myself WTF? So after about 10 mins of installing the timing belt we get it on and the engine is in time. Go to fire it up and nothing happens. We checked the timing and it was dead on all three times. pull plugs out and its getting fuel and spark. I guess the plugs had atleast 100,000 miles on them because this thing did not want to start, so we roll out to my job and pick up some NGK's, throw them in and bam she fires up and purrs like a cat in heat. I start to think to myself "this is a good deal on a suby", so I decide its time to roll out. Being as I was broke from buying the car i had only 200 left and figure i could go get the paper work done and drive this thing to work the following day. Ya right, I didnt get 30ft down the road and noticed my suspension and steering was way sloppy. My power steering pump was howling like a lone wolf so I kinda was waiting for the steering to get hard. Started down the road doing 35mph and it felt like the passenger side tire was going to fly off. I stated to get alittle mad. Made it to a GO MART and put some air in the tires and inspected the front end alittle. My brother notices that the sway bar link was snapped in half. We thought maybe that was the cause of the bad shimmy the passengers side had. I couldnt get the car over 40mph without having to fight the hell out of it to keep it on the road. so after doing 30mph in a 55mph highway I finally made it to my job. Bought some power steering fluid and a wiper blade because it was rainning. Search my store for a sway bar link and we didnt have one so daniel went to advanced auto to pick one up while I inspected my newly POS that I just bought. After chilling there for about a hour or more daniel had already installed the sway bar link and we were good to go so I thought. Got out on the highway which had a 70mph speed limit stated to bang gears and noticed this little 1.8 had some balls. Got the car up to 70 and holy hell I sure thought I was going to wreck and kill myself and 20 other people that was flying by me. once that happened i had to do 50mph just to get to the toll booth. Once i pay the toll and start to take off I noticed I was revving at 5500 rpms and shifting just to have the car and engine slow down. My damn calipers had gotten stuck on the front end of the car. Im trying hard to get it unstuck and get my butt up the road because it was rush hour and everyone but me was flying. After fighting the brakes and smelling them for 30 miles home I finally get near home and my brakes stopped working hear and there. One minute I had brakes and the next I didnt. At that point I was alittle burnt. after being lied to about the condition of the car. The hazard it was the whole way home and the fact that I wasted a whole pay check on this thing, I was pretty down about it.

After washing the car today and cleaning it I have started to form a bond with it. It wants to be a good car it just needs some time and love which I have alot of. I am really excited about the aftermarket support this thing has.

The only thing about trying to drive it home was the fact that it was totally illegal. No inspection sticker, no insurence, the plate off my brothers impreza and the state police. Luckily i hit rush hour traffic and was buried in with everyone else so seeing that my car was illegal was kinda hard for any cop.

I thought about swapping to a bigger EJ engine but the EJ18 has 7mm of cylinder wall and has proven to be able to hold 14psi with some tuning tools. Also swapping heads from the 2.2 onto the EJ18 will lower compression so that should help with forced induction aswell. STI swap is like 3k or something.
