  • Trabant Parade this Sat in DC

East German Trabants, possibly the worst car ever made which makes them cool, will be on display from 10-4 Sat 11/5 at the Spy Museum. .6L 26HP 2-cyl 2-stroke, gas tank in eng bay that must be checked with dipstick, cotton body. Classic!

IIRC, the bodies were thermoset plastic (may have been reinforced with cotton fibers) and these engines were used to start the Russian tanks. It was rumored, if it was too cold the Russians could not start enough of their tanks to be a threat to Europe.

In that first pic it looks like the Trabby has Opel rims.

I did a "tribute thread" on Trabants a while back:

              Cool cars.

Holy carp, what were you doing in Romania?!? I was there for two years too, from 1987-89, working at the Military Attache Office in the US Embassy in Bucharest.

I was there 01-03, we lived in Cluj. My dad was doing research on Lucean Blaga (philosopher/poet) for his PHD dissertation, he had a grant for a year and then extended it to two.
I was 12/13 :p but learned the language quite well, though I'm getting pretty rusty now. It was interesting living there for a while, thats for sure!
