  • A chilling map.

Saw this posted on one of other websites. It's a detailed map of every road fatality in the US between 2001-2009.

Some of it is very sad, but the picture it paints as a whole is interesting.

369,629 people died on America's roads between 2001 and 2009. Following its analysis of UK casualties last week, transport data mapping experts ITO World have taken the official data and produced this powerful map

After I zoomed in a little I was startled at all the motorcycle orange dots which is amazing when you compare the percentage of motorcycles to cars on the road. Its even worse when you think about the northern states where the riding season is only 6-7 months of the year. It definitely justifies my wife's argument for selling the bike after we had kids.

I grew up on a farm, located on a 2 lane highway and 12 miles from the nearest town. In the 13 years we lived there, there was 7 people killed on the one mile stretch directly in front of our house. In all, there was about 12+ car accidents.

The last accident occured the very last day when we were moving out. I was the only one there and was making the final walk-through to make sure we didn't forget anything. As I sat in the empty house, remembering all the great times growing up in the house, I heard a loud crash that shook the house. I looked out the front window to see what was left of 2 cars. One sat in the middle of the highway with a lady laying on the pavement beside it. The other sat in my front lawn. In all, 3 people were seriously injured. Two people died on impact, a middle aged mother and her 12yr old daughter. I was 17 at the time.

Deaths-per-million-travel-miles for motorcyclists is like(?) 15 times that in automobiles. In some states, beginning 16 year old motorcyclists had 1 chance in 100 of being dead within their first year of motorcycle riding, which has been the death rate for U.S. soldiers in some modern wars.

Most people think of vehicular highway deaths. I believe, pedestrian deaths make up 10% to 15% of traffic deaths. As you noted the motorcycle deaths, also note how many traffic deaths occur on the slower velocity back & country roads, which are less jammed & trafficked than our highways or inner-city roads.

Study our traffic pattern death rates enough, a real view of Americans & their ways of life emerge from the statistics.

^ Generally speaking, our culture doesn't take driving seriously. It's considered a necessity in a lot of places and people lose touch with what they are actually doing by driving an automobile or motorcycle. Every year we isolate ourselves more and more from the reality of driving with cars that practically drive themselves, creating drivers who treat them like they will.
Driving for me is neither a right nor a privilege. Driving is my passion, as it was for the people who invented the automobile, the people who paved the first roads and the people who continue to improve the automobile. Please respect this passion.

Oh i totally agree with you.

The Australian government are really on top of this. Shoving the message down our throats about driving.

This is why I think there should be a law requiring all people ages 16-21 to drive a manual vehicle. Would be way safer.

Also, if insurance was outlawed and it was illeagal to drive a car you owed money on then people would pay a little more attention to where they were going. Our population isn't accountable for their decisions or actions, thus irresponsible and disrespectful.

"looks like the people in canada are very good drivers, no deaths "
What's this Canada you speak of? Hahaha
