  • bp in 95 protege??

Is the 1.8 in the 95 protege a bp? Wiki says its a miata engine. Bit they also list a bp that's not dohc for the protege es. Just wondering if it would be a viable swap option cuz I can't find any earlier ones.

    BP

The 1.8 L (1,839 cc) BP is a dual-overhead variant of the B8. It was first found in the 1989 Mazda Familia and American-market 1990 Mazda Protege LX. This engine was dubbed BP-ZE and featured a forged crankshaft, piston oil squirters, a structural aluminum oil pan with cooling fins, a 7,000 rpm redline, and the Variable Inertia Charging System (VICS). This particular variant can be found in the following vehicles:
1989-1994 Mazda Familia GT (European & Australian Market)
1989-1994 Ford Laser TX3 (Australian Market)
1990-1994 Mazda Protege LX (with VICS)
1995-1998 Mazda Protege ES (Australian Market: 1994-1998 323 Protege SE)
    1990 Mazda Infini
1990-1991 and 1993 Mazda Protege GT (Canadian Market)
    1990-1993 Mazda 323 (European Market)
1991-1996 Ford Escort GT and LX-E
    1991-1996 Mercury Tracer LTS
1995-1997 Kia Sephia RS, LS, GS
    1994-1998 Mazda Familia (Japanese Market)
1994-1997 Mazda MX-5/Miata (did not have VICS until 1999)

There is also a non-performance SOHC version that is most easily recognized by its black stamped-steel oil pan. It also features a cast crankshaft, no oil squirters, a plastic oil pickup tube and less aggressive camshafts. It is found in the 1995-1998 Mazda Protege ES.

oh trust me i saw a ton of the b8 proteges in the jy. not one with a bp lol. its the 95 thing i'm worried about. everybody uses the ones from the 91-94, but when they changed the bodystyle, they evidently changed the motor some too. this car im looking at is also a auto. will i have trouble getting the engine to work with a manual trans festy if i use the engine harness from the auto protege?

Whenever vehicles were changed from OBI to OBII systems (94-95?) an engine swap between them becomes much more complicated, in my opinion. If yours is a 91-93 Festy then figure on looking for a similar vintage donor.
The clean 97 Aspire B3 engine I have awaiting installation at the moment is endowed with mostly incompatible peripherals when compared to a 92-93 B3 where it's going to wind up.

              OBD-II started in 1996, BTW.

^ that's the mandated federal start of OBD-II, but some manufactures started implementing it early in '95. be weary of Hyundai though as they had the mandated plug, but no comunication untill as late as '98.

Well I will be using the entire harness from my donor car as my festy is carbed. I'm goin to go look at the car anyway. It's a 95 protege, runs good and they want 650 for it. Not a bad price if it actually does run decent.

My readings about the '95 Proteges indicated that they began the OBD-II conversion that year, but that it is a transition year and is not fully OBD-II compliant. Now how "un"-compliant it may be and how much needs to be done I have no idea. However, if you are planning on swapping a Z5 or a later BP into a Festiva, the 1995 Protege is probably the best bet, and should have the fewest problems to overcome.

(I would love to try a 1995 Z5 swap into a Festiva some day.)

Just take that info from a guy who has done two B6 swaps and nothing else!

Engines generally all run the same way... So if you dont want to use the oem electronics, you just write in something compatible. If youre fighting with obd2 crap in a non compliant chassis, find another ecu from an engine with similar displacement/cylinder count, and match up whatever sensors it needs.

Back when I boosted my 88.5 EGT, I ran a Honda ECU chipped and DSM 440cc injectors. Just a matter of changing wires around and adding/subtracting sensors/actuators as necessary.

Yeah I have access to alldata at school. Looks like in 95 its about halfway compliant. It gives about half the usual obd2 codes but its a different data connector. But it looks like you could get a 96 computer and plug it right in. Same ecu connections. In 98 they changed the whole system again, then in 2000 they went to the 2.0 motor. A 98-99 protege bp would be newest that would fit I guess. But the whole system is completely different from the 90-94.

Any input about the auto to manual thing? Will it still run the engine right with the trans wires unplugged?
