  • Heard a new one today @ Autozone

The battery in the wife's Mountaineer shot craps today, so I took it back to Autozone to see if it had any warranty left. Turns out it didn't so the kid priced me a new battery for 117.00. I told him I didn't have the money, so I would just pull the battery out of my Festiva to get by for a week. He looked it up on his computer and said, "Its a lot smaller...only 640CCA. Your mountaineer calls for 850CCA. It will overcharge the smaller battery and ruin it."

Can someone explain the logic behind this? I've never heard of such a thing and can't figure out where he would come up with such an idea, LOL.

I can tell you why he said that... he wanted to sell you a battery!

On a side note, I've been running a B6 festiva off a 300CCA $25 lawnmower battery for two+ years now. Still cranks fast :p

its a load. i work at an advance auto and car batteries dont quite work like that. ive been running an 800cca in my festiva for years now, and have used smaller than recommended during the summer and at the track for weight savings and i promise you, as long as its a 12v car battery it wont "overcharge" unless your alternator goes crazy, breaks and its internal regulator allows it, in which case its still not the batteries fault, its a faulty alternator.

I say take your money elsewhere, to a place that wont screw you by feeding you lines of BS. BTW, im pretty sure a mountaineer calls for a 650 or 700 cca stock. most v8 trucks only have a 600cca or so stock from the factory (sans diesels of course).

Generally, azone and advance only hire people with 0 real life experience with vehicles, so they can teach them to say things like that..

Also, did you know that you can't buy a generic/cheaper/ANY other fuel filter for a vehicle, other than the ones listed in their book as compatible? Instead of buying a cheap 10$ fuel filter for an aspire, you NEED the 30$ one they sell with the bracket on it, otherwise it will ruin your engine and they can't give you a warranty for it.

        Something like that

There's a local parts store here called Marietta Ignition, who I deal with almost exclusively, save for parts they don't have, or something I can get online for half the price. They might have slightly higher prices on a few items, but I'd rather deal with someone with common sense than those idiots. If the guys at mtta ignition don't have the part, they'll help you figure out what will work and point you in the right direction instead of saying "it's totaled" ..which according to auto zone guys, my aspire has been totaled 3 times, and my 03 van once when I bent the backing plate for the rear drum.

$117 is too much anyways. Should be $100 tops.

A dead battery will cause overcharging, but a smaller than required wont. The smaller unit can cause issues with cranking speeds or duration, but once started the car only runs @ 30-60 amps. Unless u have boom boom, then all bets are off.

The regulator only senses voltage drop, not CCA.

You can ask for "out of date" batteries at most mcparts stores. They don't have the long warranty but are alot cheaper.

I just bought a new out of date battery for my exploder and it was $35
