  • Trip in red thunder

I am thinking of something stupid...
I am thinking on my 8 days off from the holidays (not christmas lol). I should take a road trip in Red Thunder. I was thinking Phoenix to Red Wood National Park.

    I have replaced...
Front brakes, rear wheel bearings, repacked grease in the front wheel bearings, outer tie rods, belts, tires....thats about it.
She has ~315k on her. Motor does not burn oil and the distributor makes a slight tick (the Silver Dragon did as well 89L RIP).

The only thing I may do is change the disty and take a spare alternator and tools.

    Dumb idea or best Idea?

Agreed - excellent idea. Just take off and do it.

Make sure you're happy with the age and condition of your timing belt and water pump ... 315K is approaching early middle age even with a Festiva!

If it's an EFI model check/change small coolant bypass hoses. There's a small U shaped one in front and a longer one behind the motor. Maybe more.

I wouldn't hesitate in taking a long trip in a Festiva! I did all the regular maintenance stuff before we did our 14 day, 6100 mile trip this fall. Car performed great with no major issues. See what we did at www.econoboxcafe.com
