Despite my screen name being Grey Vw I don't know much about them. I plan on buying a 1994 Golf 2.0 that needs an auto tranny to flip. Apparently not all auto trannies are the same and each have a code. I tried looking but am not having any luck.

Anyone know where to find the 3 letter code?

if you are buying to flip but needing a tranny that could run up your profit margin a lot, ive flipped a lot of cars in the last 20 years & i always try to buy running cars, i have had success with a few that needed some small things done to them but unless you are a very good mechanic (im not) i would stick with cars that you can get in and test drive & check out everything b/c there could be more things wrong with the car that the seller isnt disclosing to you. jmo

The seller said I could drive it back home but the tranny hesitates. %50 at the junkyard is this weekend so $80 transmission for the win! It also has aftermarket parts that i'm going to take off and sell apart from the car.

i'll sell you my 98 vr6 gti for $2000. all it needs is a rear hatch and maybe a partial paint job. That will fund my festiva project or my bullmastiff puppy

hesitation is a sign of low fluid level and the shift valves then take time to fill before actuation (requires VW fluid, ONLY!!). go and lowball him with the knowlege that a good trans for a VW is expensive!!! and sucks to put in. as far as the codes go, you could find them in the glovebox, or behind a pannel in the hatch area.

^ that depends on year, nasty, the newer ones have a very inacessable fill port and a seperate level indicator hole.

his VW though should still have a dipstick of sorts. my cousin can fill in more specifics if needed so don;t hesitate to ask!
