  • Mazda 2.3?

Just put hands on a Mazda 6 with a 2.3. Doing a clutch job on it. Driving it to diagnose, even with a slipping clutch, that thing has some torque! About 143 foot pounds, with 138 bhp! Can't help but wonder if one could be stuffed under a Festiva hood....

Dang. Wikipedia listed 138 bhp and 195 Nm of torque. It could be wrong of course. I know this sucker moves even with a slipping clutch.

I would suggest leaving the governor out of the mix

I have an st focus with said 2.3 dura tec engine. The focus version would be better to use. No vvt and no direct injection. Just easier as far as wiring and what not. And makes just as much power. Ive thought about this swap ALOT! Honestly i think it would fit. But it would be really really had. And it would need 100% custom axles, because the tq on a 2.3 would snap the festiva axles really quickly. The easier swap would be the svtf. Use the svt focus motor. Its a highly modified. Version of the zetec engine. Makes more hp then the 2.3 and same tq. Plus since its a zetec u could use the trans from an escort with if im not mistaken is a g series trans. I know its a mazda trans. Only issue with that would be the axles also. And wiring since the svt has vct u would need an svtf wiring harness since the regular focus wiring will not run an svt motor due to the vct.

the "tech" series engines will not mate to a B series engine transmission (E, F, and G series trans). reason being is the bellhousing is very different. yes there's a G series trans for the KL engines, but again, the bellhousing is different.

if you were to use the 2.3 or any "tech" engine, you'd want to use the SVT manual trans. since it has 3 layshafts, the case is much shorter than a standard 5 speed trans of the same strength. i still think you have to worry about the bellhousing with that as well, but not positive.

^^arty, if he was referring to the 99+ escorts, they are G series trannies as well with a 26 spline diff (different bell housing then the B series and K series engines), so use the Capri axles and your good to go

The only question left would be, does it physically fit in the engine bay?

ok, i guess i'm thinking the 2.3 as in the one thats currently used in the mazda 3 and mazdaspeed 6 (turbo).

i would say that a model year range should be specified when refering to the 2.3 (or 2.0 for that matter)

What about the ECU? Does it control the safety features? If so, a reflash could be expensive, but I guess megasquirt could remedy that. Scitzz, can you get some measurements of the engine and trans? I'm thinking www.thedriveshaftshop.com for custom axles.

Ecu would be easy just find a focus and use that harness and ecu u will need the pats key and alot of other stuff. I could give ya alot of info of some one is serious about this. And the 2.0/2.3/2.5 duratec engines used in the mazdas and the focus now will not work. U would need the ford or new mazda trans. I was talking about using the svt focus 2.0 zetec engine. It has the same bell housing pattern as the zx2 escorts and all escorts that run the zetec engine. So it will bolt up to said g series trans. You DO NOT i repeat DO NOT want to use the svt getrag six speed trans. Its not worthe it, way to expensive, and uses completly different axles. Svtf axles are 350$ each. Not worthe trying to hack up. When the escort trans would work just fine. Not to mention the svt trans is heavier, and its not smaller the the g series or the mtx-75(mazda3,focus, and mazda6 trans). Trust me i have one sitting in my closet! Your best bet is the zetec engine with the g series escort trans. As far as will it fit...... Front to back yes, may need to massage the fire wall like with the bp swaps, but im farly sure it will fit. Side to side i'm unsure. I know using the six speed trans i honestly dont think so, i think the trans is just to big. And with the g trans im not sure i have never seen a g trans. This is a swap i have planned out quiet a few times if u cant tell.
