looking at a mazda protege

4 door 5 speed 175.000 miles 1.8 , a/c
What are some things I need to look for before I make an offer. Car history, been in same family since new ,daughter doesn't like manual trans , been sitting for about a year

Is it a single cam, or dual cam? Are you looking at this as a swap donor, or a driver? If they will let you take the valve cover off it will tell you a lot about how the motor was cared for. You want a nice golden or slightly brown color under there. Black and/or cruddy means they may have missed a few oil changes lol. If you are looking for it as a driver then drive it! Check brakes, wheel bearings, CV axles, see if the clutch slips, plus anything in the interior that you particularly care about.

Looking at this car for a daily driver for the familly as a third car or as needed , just wanted to know if there were any known issues with the motor . I think it'd just a plan Jane 1.8 I can tell it needs a valve five gasket,battery, 3 hub caps,a/c. Switch on dash.

does it have body color mirrors and door handles? if it does then it is a dual cam, if not then its single cam.

Proteges are a really nice riding car, I really like mine and it has been really reliable even though I don't pay as close attention to maintaining it as I should.

I love the Proteges, always checking CL for a 4wd one. If you do buy it, make sure you change the oil as soon as possible since it's been sitting for so long.

It has black door mirrors , that are adjustable from inside .

That's a dx then, single cam. but it will get better mileage.

I love my 4wd, it needs some TLC though...
