  • How much $$$$?

How much is a 5 speed festy tranny worth? I have a chance at one for $150.
May pick it up tomorrow, if I can. Figure I might offer $125 or about, and see if he agrees.
And what should I be on the lookout for when inspecting it for condition?

Owner said it had 115,000 miles on it. Still connected to the engine too, which had a bad cylinder.

    Thanks all!

One can be (and many have been) had for $100 or less. That said, $125 isn't a bad deal.

Not much you can do to test a tranny without a running motor attached to it. If you have a linkage you could try to shift it and feel if the gears engage semi-smoothly.

If you aren't in need of a tranny you could probably hold out and find one closer to the 75 range. But if you need one then 125 isn't bad.

Pic N Pull price is just over 125. I always figure they define the high end of bottom of the barrel for a tranny and many other parts, though I think they gouge on easy to unbolt stuff.

          Thanks guys.
I seen 'em go for $75 now and then, but they are hard to come by here.
Hardly ever see one for sale and the parts cars offered up are usually stripped of the drivetrain already.
I'm gonna try for the $125...or maybe start with $100? I hate to wait, and miss it. They disappear quick.

Well, I got the 5 speed tranny today.
Had to pay $150 for it.
The guy wouldnt come down, said he had another buyer if I didnt take it.
Well i've been trying to find one around here for about a year with no luck, so I buckled and got it. Though I feel like I screwed myself somewhat, I now finally, have a 5 speed tranny!
I know where a B6 from a 323 is. Only one I can find within 150 miles. Wants $250 for the B6. Yikes! These prices are killing me. LOL

I don't think $150 is all that bad. If you've been looking for a year it certainly isn't! As for the $250 B6, that doesn't sound so bad either, as long as it has a 30 day warranty. My first B6 was bought "off the shelf" from a 'yard and cost me $300. My second one my Dad and I pulled at another 'yard for $75.

You shouldn't feel gypped. Some areas are just luckier than others, and prices will vary.

Karl is correct..as usual. That's not a bad price. You have to consider the supply of these parts are decreasing. Also consider how much $ you will save by keeping the festy going esp with a five speed instead of a four speed. $150 isnt bad at all IMO. It's money in the bank.

That's not a bad price at all. Sure there's tranaxles for less, but I know of guys paying way more.
The key to saving money here would be to make a deal for the junk car to go with it for a few dollars more. And it is a junk car at this point with a bad engine and no trans right!? then you throw your old trans in the back seat when you're done with the swap and take it all to the scrappers where you might break even (figure around $250 +or- from them) or you can see from that number, maybe even make a small profit!
I do this sort of thing all the time...people think of me as "lucky"

Inspecting tranny better. I was afraid the tranny might have dropped the spider gears, as the PO pulled the axles and had turned the tranny too.
But, with closer inspection, and what I am seeing, is it looks like all is ok.
Am I correct, that the gears have not dropped?
