  • My "new" Eagle

I was passing through Provo, UT on my way to Elko, NV for work and stopped to look at an Eagle that was for sale. I told the seller I had no intentions of buying it but I really wanted to see it. He was gracious enough to take me for an off road ride and I wanted it but timing financially wasn't just right He spent over $20k having it built and was trying to get half out of it. A week and a half later he called me and made me a deal I couldn't refuse. I picked it up Friday night and I'm in the process of driving it back to TN. I stopped in CO to visit some friends for a couple days.

I did a little wheeling in Idaho Springs with a buddy today

Oh and I'm sorry, it's a Chevy engine.

That SX4 you have there (The Gold one)... I used to have one of those, only it was lowered, and the AMC motor had been replaced with a 3.8SC. I wish I'd have had more ambition in my younger days, that was a very sweet little car that never ran right, and with the body work it "needed", I ended up just getting rid of it.

Yeah, I know. The first thing I'm going to do when I get home is yank out that turd and install a B3.

Half way home in Blue Springs, Mo. Unfortunately, I found out it's not an LS1 but a 5.3l with LS1 intake and accessories. No big deal, it runs great. Last 2 tanks were 18.8 and 18.7 mpg. Not bad for a V8 and 35" tires.

                  This is simply not true.

I have to correct this common error, which is so widely believed and circulated by people who don't know AMC.

Long time AMC owner/collector here, as well as a few Festivas. I even sold AMCs for a while in the early 1970s.

The only non-AMC engine ever used in AMC cars was a Packard V-8 used in some 1956 Nashes and Hudsons.

AMC switched to its own design first generation 287 and 327 cid engines (NOT a Chevy 327, it pre-dated the Chevy 327 by six years) in late 1956. The 1957 Rambler Rebel with a 275hp four-barrel 327 from the Nash Ambassador was arguably the first muscle car.

The 199, 232, and 258 cid sixes and the 4.0L Jeep six were all AMC designed and built, starting with the 1963 Rambler Typhoon.

The 290, 304, 343, 360, 390, and 401 V-8s were also all AMC designed and built, starting with the 1967 Rebel and Ambassador.
The 360 (it was NOT a Mopar 360) was used in the Jeep Grand Wagoneer until they ended production in 1991. Even after Chrysler bought out AMC in 1987 they still used the AMC 360 in the Wagoneer.

Jeep did use some V-6 and V-8 engines from Buick in the late 1960s, but that was before Jeep was bought by AMC in 1970.

Oops!! You are correct. I forgot about that one. The Pontiac 151 was used from 1979-1983.
In 1984 AMC started making their own inline 4, based on the 4.0L six.

Thanks. It's a blast to drive, but I still like driving my little Festiva also.

Just found an 83 Eagle wagon for $1200, interior looks pretty good and body isn't to bad. If they still have it when i get out for summer (and get paying employment) I might get it. I need a car with AC.

I also have a friend that might be getting one soon, she has been borrowing her aunts RHD Subaru Legacy for awhile but someone she knows is selling an eagle cheap so she might get it instead.

Any quirks to look out for (Dad mentioned having to put a lot of drive shafts in when he ran wrecker), and what mileage can i reasonably expect from one (6Cyl Auto)

Here is the one i am looking at
