  • got restless - finished home made console w/ cup holders & speakers

started it this am (got the wood yesterday) and its all but finished. need to stain it and screw on 2 mending plates to bolt to existing bolts under the dash. it was JUST big enough to put 5.25" speakers in it. it was my first one - made a couple little errors but only one was barely noticable.

the trans is in 3rd so there is more than enough clearance. thats a 20oz cup beside to 12oz can.

that cuby hole on top is about 6"x7" and it is not square - it is wider at the front and gets 1" narrower at the back so its out of the way at your feet. the cup holders are grey and match up well with the interior. I have about $25 in materials including the cup holders.

The one you got from me should be there in a couple of days. Patience grasshopper. That does look cool.

probably won't use it now because on the factory console the cuby is in the wrong place and cuby looks too wide for speaker magnet clearance and tall 20oz. cups won't interfere with radio or dash controls.

That's unique as hell! Looks a lot like the "toyboxes" truckers use in slipseat rigs. Very cool. Can't wait to meet you next Saturday!

thanks, I like to better function wise than a factory console

finished it with stain/urathane and a 3 way plug

next; do the rear speaker set up for 6x9 sony explodes

also I hope to install a AK-47 pistol grip shifter.

as you can see there is good clearance for the foot to the gas pedal.

You may decide to put your idea into production, hint hint.

already made the side templates - thats all you really need. the centers pieces can be 5-8" wide depending on your preferance. the center pieces are from a 1/4" thick x 6"x24" birch piece and sides are same stuff only from a 2'x2' piece. I put a 1/2"x2" piece in the back for stability.

anybody want a side template on cardboard with a decent sketch of the other parts and the measurments are welcome to have them for postage.

I could make them but it would be $65-75 to make it worthwhile. it cost me about $20 for the wood and hardware. I know it took 4-5 hours to build.
I got lucky and found the cupholders at the jy for a buck apiece. new ones are $8 but
you can find those in the custom vans at the jy sometimes.

the second pic shows how it lines up with the existing bolts under the dash. I just used 2 mending plates and bolted them to the back of the box & to those existing bolts so it's very stable. I used bolts with phillips screw heads on the box with wing nuts on the back side to hold it in place. you can take it out or put it in w/o using any tools in less than a minute (but don't forget to unplug the speakers, lol) . the sides go below the hump so it has virtually no play at all, side to side or front to back.

That looks decent! Perhaps you really should go for a "woodstiva."

that looks great. You could use the Taurus cup/coin holder in one with smaller(maybe 4") speakers, & maybe mount the 3 way plug into it also. Just thinkin'. I usually get into trouble when I do that.

I have thought for a while of a 2 way plug + 2USB port charger in place of the ashtray....
