  • Removing the headliner

I'm in the process of transferring the interior of my junkern '88LX into my '91L, and I can't figure out how to get the headliner off of the LX. I got as far as the rods that hold it in place and I'm stumped. They seem to be wedged in there and I can't figure out how to get them out short of using brute force.

Anyone know how to remove it?

    Regards,

    Tim

how far along are you? After you get all the sides pulled away from the car you'll be left with the tension rods. Just carefully bend them till they pop out of one side. Just be careful.

I've undone everything except the tension rods. They are all that need to be undone to remove the headliner.

Which way do I bend them? Is there a particular method you found most successful?

My goal is to get the whole thing out intact....

If I remember correctly I slid the rod over to one side and then just pushed the middle to the front or back then grabbed the other end and pulled it out of the slot it's in. They are kind of tight.

I had little trouble removing one from a 'yard car. Maybe you need to work on your hand strength.

Pull one end out while you push it to the side a bit. It should come out.

If you break one, I imagine you could replace it with a fiberglass pole of the appropriate diameter and length.

Well, I poked, pushed, prodded, bent, twisted, and cursed for 20 minutes and got the headliner out intact!

At one point I thought for sure I had snapped a fiberglass pole but luckily it was just the sound of it creaking loose.

Did you guys take the foam on the roof off too?

              How easy is reinstallation?

              Thanks for all the help!

I didn't install the foam. Use double stick carpet tape to install the headliner. Use it in place of the glue that held it in place around the edges.
