Idea for a cool non-Festy swap

Driving home last night, I passed a really nice, clean '94-ish Escort wagon. I always liked that generation of Escort/Tracer, and a wagon would be very practical at this stage in my life. Of course, a BP and 5 speed would be cool.....as would all-wheel drive. I think it would make for a really capable winter driver, similar to a Subaru, but Mazda/Ford based.

How hard would it be to make an AWD Escort wagon with BP or B6t power? Could you use the AWD trans and rear axle from a 323GT?

I think an AWD protege would be you're best bet as a donor. I'd love to find an Escort wagon with a bad motor and/or trans and do a BP/Gseries in it. Wife and I have talked about it numerous times and we are completely sold on the idea. Just waiting on the right swap candidate to pop up on CL But down here we wouldn't need the AWD though lol. I think an AWD BP+T wagon would be a track monster too!

If you truly wanted to make an awd escort, you'd want an awd protege as a donor since they're based on the same chassis

Yeah, I never thought about the Protege....makes sense. I don't think I've ever seen an AWD Protege before (at least not here). Were they a wagon?

I do have a really nice '95 Tracer Sport 4-door sedan with a good 1.9L and bad ATX. It's not the wagon that I want, but it would also make a nice BP swap. Did the EGT ever come with an ATX? I wonder how hard a 1.9L to BP swap would be?

The AWD protege's are the same sedan style as the FWD ones, from the top side they look the same lol

The egt was offered as an automatic. But you would need the egt tranny as well. The swap i don't think would be very hard, just swap over the engine harness along with all the mounts and such.

The Auto trans is the same for the EGT with BP as the 1.9. It is not a strong tranny as I recall. On the Escort Message board you can get some info. I don't think its as easy as a BP in a festiva.

Bellhousings are quite different. I believe the internals are the same or at least similar though, I think they are all F4EATs. If you're lucky you might be able to use the same axles but I'm not sure. But the 1.9 trans WILL NOT bolt up to the BP, seen enough of them over the years to know that!
