  • Met another member at the PnP today!

I went back to the Cowlumbus PnP today to check on a '93GL crank pulley and see what other damage I could do to the parts supply. I parked next to a blue Festiva, so I figured I'd have some competition!

I arrived at the blue GL and someone was underneath removing the rack. It was Shawn (or Shaun, Sean, etc?) "Hodginsa" who was there for the rack and some Aspire suspension love.

We helped each other out and made each others' acquaintance for about a couple hours. The rear Aspire axle he wanted didn't quite come out due to an obnoxious RR strut bolt, so he left it.

A good day at the 'yard was had by all!

Thats why I always carry a hack saw and a few blades!
Explosives are better, but PnP's frown on such things!

He got the bolt to turn a bit, but the resistance stayed the same. Chances are it was becoming undone on the inside already.

With the hacksaw, I suppose you'd cut the shock at the bottom? Get it home and work on soaking it in PBB and applying heat.

            Sean. Haha

Yeah it was a great day. I need to get the rear beam somehow!
Ill be installing the front aspire struts next weekend, as well as hopefully putting in a fresh rack.

You can cut it w/a hacksaw. You will have to take the blade off and fit it inside the area where the bolt is, then reassemble the blade onto the hacksaw frame; then saw away.

I just found out its half price at the PickNPull this weekend, wish I had bought the stuff then! I'm going to get a rear beam this weekend for sure.

Even if I cut the bolt, won't it still be seized in there? I was going to just cut the shock mount off and then deal with it at home. It sounds like you want me to cut the bolt off inside the frame, but that sounds like a bigger nightmare to remove after.

Personally i'd cut the shock and deal with it at home

Usually when those lower strut bolts seize they aren't actually seized in the threads, but they seize to the eyelet where they go through the strut. If you cut the bolt on both sides of the eyelet, and take the whole strut out, usually a pair of pliers is enough to unscrew the leftover part of the bolt. Only once have I seen the actual threads seized, and that was on a very rusty beam. Needless to say we passed up on that one and looked for another.

Sean, what about the rear axle on that red '96? Did you look at it to see what kind of shape it was in?

Yeah, to me it felt like the rubber was trying to spin, not the bolt being seized, that makes a lot of sense too. Ill probably go to the yard and attempt to remove the struts on both cars and see if one is better than the other. But a hack saw is a must. I will probably need to grab another strut bolt anyway so Its a needed task regardless.

If the bolt would turn a little and it felt like the rubber wanted to spin then its a classic case of bolt-seized-to-the-eyelet. Just hacksaw the bolt on either side of the eyelet and the leftover piece of bolt will come right out.

Yeah Ill have to try that, I guess I'm just worried that ill hack too much off of the one side and not have anything to grab onto.
