  • can a mechanical speedometer throw a code if it malfunctions?

festivas and aspires have mechanical speedometers from the diff carrier speedo gear to the gauge in the cluster, is there any way it could throw a code? I can't imagine even the OBD2 96-97 aspires getting a code from that..?

Definitely not. There is no way there would be a code, even in early OBDII for a speedo, and definitely not mechanical speedo.

My '91 Civic would throw a VSS code if the speedo wasn't working properly. The Festiva and Aspires don't have that type of VSS though, so no.

That's what I thought, the guy won't say what exact cel is on, just that its related to a speed sensor, but his speedo is broke and I think its two different issues.

Umm I believe the newer aspires use a VSS along with a cable

My old 97' aspire would show the speed through the OBD2 port, so it had to have gotten the signal from somewhere

The vehicle speed sensor is an integral part of the speedometer. As the vehicle drives down the road, the speedometer gear assembly is turned by the speedometer cable. The speedo cable rotates the speedo and vss simultaneously, giving a speed signal to the ecm. Any problems will set a code 6.... Pg 6-13 of the haynes manual.

Maybe that is what the screws on the back of the speedometer are for and not just grounding like I thought. I'm missing something there for sure, but thanks for helping me clear that up. I was kind of hoping not to have to dig out the manual, but I guess it needed the dust knocked off..

Wait so the aspires were mechanical speedo but outputted to OBDII? Weird haha, learn something new. Seems very backwards, should've just use a speed sensor.
