  • Son's new old car.

"The best laid plans of mice and men....". Awhile ago I ask for suggestions
about the best car for a young guy in college that had great mpg's, under $5K
a manual tranny and most importantly reliability. An Echo? Sentra? Saturn?.
2 out of 4 ain't bad. My mother in law past away about 3 weeks ago and he inherited her '91 Buick Century. 60,000 miles. It has the red tuffed Canadian brothel interior. Other than the intense smoke smell inside and total clearcoat disintegration it's a nice old floating, over assisted power steering cruiser - and free. Not exactly what he was looking for, but I'm happy:p. Weird how things turn out.

not a bad car - had the cutlass - same thing. 2.8 is a good engine, so's the 3.1
the 3.3 or 3.8 weren't as good imo but with the 3.1 or 2.8 you should get 24-25 mpg in town. if it has od trany you may be replacing it at 150-175k.

fabreeze/odorban the int. well and throw in about 10 dryer sheets and it will get most if not all the smoke odor out. be sure its all closed up when you do that. leave it for a day or 2. repeat if necessary.

    sorry about your mil.

We had a '93 Regal 3.8. Got high 20s MPG probably because OD trans that dropped RPMs to idle at 70 MPH!

I've also heard that if you leave a jar of vinegar in the car as it sits, the vinegar will absorb the smells.

EDIT: And nobody will laugh after the new sound system is in it.

Peroxide will take the tar of the windows with a little elbow grease. Good luck

Coffe grounds and apple slices helped my brothers old truck a lot, you could actually see the apples stain from the crap in the air.

Also need to keep an eye on the intake gasket on that car, almost all front drive V6 gm cars have intake gasket problems.

I also seem to remember that you have to lift the engine to replace the oil filter?

Put a little lemon juice on the apple slices, they won't turn brown from the air!

Thanks for all the comments. A great sound system might be the answer for
this car. Also, fuel injectors were a problem with the 3.3.

not on these, some jags you had to but i have never had a problem changing oil in ours.

Also the apples turned brown then you would start to see a greenish color come over them, but not like it was getting moldy. It was weird.

I had a '93 Grand Marquis as one of my first cars. Gotta love that big boat. I'm sure your son will love his too
