Oh god, thats so infuriating! How hard is it to pull over when your tire is blown, really how hard is it to gently apply the brakes. How do you keep travelling into oncoming traffic, even after a barricade comes up. WOW

This is the reason why my mom keeps offering to pitch in for a Honda Fit. Stuff like this really freaks me out, just because I would never ever want to hurt my girlfriend, and if something freakish like this happens, I easily could, and I could never live with myself if something ever happened like that.

I have a friend who was doing EMS, his very first day on the job had to respond to a guy who got hit by a train, when they arrived not only had he been hit, but he was tangled up in the wheels, in many directions, they first just thought he was already gone, but he was still alive! After that incident a few hours later he had to respond to a kid who was lit on fire by his brother, entire body was terribly burnt. My friend seemed to handle it alright.

It could have been a Cadillac, and that accident would have killed the driver. My heart is heavy for those two people. Perhaps we as a forum can pay our respects somehow, on the case that it is a member?

Yeah, but the stupid one didn't die! We're in an age of reverse evolution, and this is proof.

Every crumple zone was used up..they were as far over to the barrier as they could get.
There is heavy dash impact and no damage to the shoulder strap area, it could have
been an auto inactive seat belt and the lap only part in use. The at fault car with
functioning belts and airbags still did not protect the driver a whole lot better. That car
would have been1/3 again heavier. Weight, poor handling, bad gas mileage heavy
iron will always win against any lighter victim. It really sucked that they were trapped
by the concrete and could not get any farther away.

Ban ???heck, trains still have head ons and we don't ban them, we subsidize them, and
in California we have the state build faster ones!! Live and love life or live like you fear
              death...but guess what?!!!

Thank whatever diety to which you subscribe that evolution doesn't actually work that way...

Not really true until you start including 8 kiloton SUVs in the mix. Small cars are designed to more exacting standards than larger ones because of the misconceptions about safety. Fact is, while an SUV is very likely to roll over and kill it's occupants or at least severely damage them, most small cars have a low enough CoG that as long as the energy transfer doesn't tuna-can them, they'll simply bounce away from the heavier object and remain on their wheels.

The SMART ForTWO has the highest IIHS safety rating for frontal and side impacts. Sucks that we don't get the "good" models, though.

I realize that the Smart car doesn't crunch like a festiva, but I watched a video of one hitting a Jersey barrier at 70mph, it almost vaulted the wall and then bounced back about 10 feet. Although it wasn't crumpled, if you were inside your spine/neck would be jellied.

That same crash probably would have vaulted an SUV, which has significantly more impact force at the same speed, clean over or through the barrier and onto it's roof, quite possibly causing much more damage to life and property.

Man that sux. However, doesn't that steering wheel crumple really make it look like the seat belt wasn't on, at least for the driver?

I hate to say it but it sounds like the Festiva driver was following too close to the pickup possibly. I always pay attention to what's going on ahead of the vehicles that are ahead of me. If I can't see far enough ahead to be comfortable, I either pass or back off. ESPECIALLY when driving my Festy. My soon to be driving daughter wanted one of the Festivas, I said nope....

People at my work constantly ask if I'm scared when driving my festy on the highway(I work at Honda R&D where everyone drives a new cushy/safe Honda haha). My answer is always "No", because I'm a very observant and constantly aware of everything around me when I drive. Now if they ask the same question to me about my girlfriend driving my car my response would be, "I don't let her drive my car" haha

Though sometimes when I pass a truck on a single lane highway, I imagine what would happen if it just decided to come into my lane, and head on with me. I quickly clear those thoughts with the fact I know the outcome would be the same in my jacked up Toyota Tacoma. Haha

Did anyone notice the tire thread on the Festiva at 33 seconds.

Very sad, unfortunately it happens daily. At least no one was texting.
