I've been meaning to post this for a while but a few months ago we went to a rally school to play in the mud.
heres my experience:
The name of the place was dirtfish rally school in seattle.
first off this place is tucked away in the mountains outside seattle on about 300 acres that was an old saw mill. There are wild berries growing everywhere which attract deer and we had to halt the class to let some walk through. My instructor didnt notice it as soon as i did because he was busy showing me where to get the car for the next turn. I drifted the turn and dodged the deer like a pro ! ha.
All the driving instructors are the coolest guys you could meet, nothing but smiles and high fives. And they dont judge when you come into a corner too hot and smear a few cones across the dirt.
The day starts off in a nice showroom type place where there are tv's with rally movies playing, and 3 rally cars in the showroom. One was the McRae focus another was the Richard Burns subaru, the other was really old like late 70s ford escort. You sign some papers then you meet the instructors and head into a classroom for a few of the basics on weight transfer, left foot braking, steering with the throttle etc. then its off to the course.
They have at least 10 subarus on site that are rally ready. They split the class up in half then half begin with getting comfortable driving the car while the other half watch, then you switch. You would think it would suck to have to watch other people drive but you can learn alot by watching and then when you get in the car you can make less mistakes. (at least I learn that way.)
Highlight of my day was carrying through a sweeping U-turn sideways all the way around while looking through the side window to see.
Also i cant say enough about how cool everyone who works there is, all the way to the girl at the front desk you have to sign insurance papers with. You can tell they are real enthusiasts and wouldnt rather be anywhere else.
Only bummer was how rainy and muddy it was (seattle, duh) made for a little bit slower of a course because it was full of puddles and mud. Other than that i was all smiles and giddy the rest of the weekend.
Over all it was a blast and my wife had fun too (how many wives sign up to drive a rally car???)
