I don't wait at all, slam it , fill it and go..
I use the silicone for gear oil.
I do not let it set at all before assembly.
My surfaces and and bolt holes are surgically
clean. Wire wheel bolts.
Never had a leak if this is followed, I do hundreds
each year.Reflex paint by Langeman...Lifted...Tow Rig

Ring ring....ring ring, Hello, room 209 please. Hello sir, this is the shop with
your pick up. Yes, we found the leak, it was the differential cover, looked like
it rubbed over something and broke the factory sealant. My technician has resealed
it but you will have to wait until Monday to pick your rig up. Sir..sir, please calm
down, I know this is not even lunch on Friday....Sorry about your Bass tournament
tomorrow ....No I don't know how much money and TV coverage you get...Sir, please
listen, I know all the other shops in town do differential services in less than an hour
but my technician is just out of the best automotive college in Arizona and he pointed
out that the sealant we have always used will not be fully cured for 24 hours and we
are not open during the weekend. Fire him???!! Me do it!! I can't, I'm
fishing in a Bass tournament tomorrow!! Have a nice weekend!Reflex paint by Langeman...Lifted...Tow Rig

RTV = Room Temperature Vulcanizing
This means it will "set-up" at a thickness of 1/4" in 15 minutes of drying time. I have never waited for RTV to "full cure" in 25+ years of auto mechanics. I guess it depends on what you are using, but the typical RTV Silicone gasket maker/sealant like Permatex Ultra Blue, Black, Red, etc. are good to go by the time you get the bolts tightened.Brian
