  • SEARS is offering free alignment checks

I showed up at a Sears at opening time this Sunday a.m. with a $20 oil change coupon in hand. Before I knew what was happening, they had gadgets clipped to all of my wheels checking the alignment. When I said "I'm just here for oil," they said "We do this free with any service.''

You get a printout (see attached) with all the results. They didn't even try to sell me alignment service, pointing out that my front toe was so little out of spec (basicalliy no toe in or out). I was out the door 18 minutes after opening time.

They also gave me a coupon good for $5 off thru 12/31/2013 in the main store (any Sears location).

Sears has farmed out auto service to Green&Ross in my neck of the woods, probably because they priced themselves out of the market a decade ago. And I do have a buddy that took to calling that outfit "Pimps and Queers" (Simpson-Sears) years back. Sears & Roebuck was the US parent I think.

If you get a straight piece of 4-5 foot pipe or square stock across the wheels and chalk the pavement front and back at the same distance a measuring tape will tell you where you stand. I did mine this afternoon (was getting suspicious about tire wear) to discover my wheels are toed-out way more than they should be. I used to undo and spin a tie rod in order to move in or out but now that I've seen the inside of an inner tie rod (which is a ball and socket joint) I realize none of that is necessary.
