Is there a way to advance the mileage of a tach speedometer to match the existing mileage so that the mileage is actual, with a drill or whatever? The tach cluster is a plug and play installation isn't it? no mods except for rerouting the cable to one side instead of the middle? I'm considering doing this swap and I don't want any surprises.

If the one you are going to install has lower mileage ,go with it ,that is a given
Do not use a drill ,or a dremel I already thought and started to try that ,It is way too fast and would end up breaking or seizing up something .
As far as plug and play yes It could not have been easier ,
Unscrew it from the trans ,that will give you the excess you need to pull the cluster out ,Once you get the cluster pulled out you unclip all the plugs and the speedo cable .
Then pull the cable from the engine side till it is all the way against the firewall, then push it thru the other side of the brace, then you will need to feel it thru the cluster hole and pull the cable up to the cluster ,hook up your wire harness ,they only go on one way ,screw it all back in, and screw your speedo cable back in to your tranny------------------------------------------------

why would anyone drill on there odometer to change it to the true mileage of the car? if your new tach has higher mileage why wouldnt you just take the odo-speedo assembly out of your old unit and put it with the new? its a lot easier than trying to changes the unit itself-Taylor

Ive done that twice using " wills article". Pretty cool, love the alert when the headlights are left on. My problem was for the next month after the swap I would forget about the new cluster and glance down briefly and about have a heart attach because I thought the car was running hot and out of gas since the placement of the temp gauge and the gas guage on the new gauge reversed from the original cluster. Stills freaks me out sometimes. You'll see what I mean.sigpic

speedometer replacement
Threading it out of and reversing the speedo cable makes sense so far as you've described but how do you attach it to the backside of the cluster? On my busted cable it looks like it's attached with a heavy staple through the cable itself and just bent around the other side. Is this basically it?

Any comments, advise is welcomed.

There is a pretty easy way to change the odometer reading on the newer (white faced) models. It involves taking the back off, breaking a small tab that holds the odometer in place, pulling it out and then spinning it where you need it to go. Put it back in and hold it in place with a small dab of superglue.
I've done it to 3 of mine, I've "helped" 3 people that I've sold them to by doing the same and it always works fine.
