When you try to start your Festiva, it forces you to push the clutch pedal down. Is there a way that one could make it so they don't have to push the pedal down, and it can simply be in neutral?

Disable the neutral safety switch, perhaps? I wouldn't know how, but I might be able to figure it out.
Actually, no. The NSS is for automatics only. The manuals would have something either in their gearshift sensor in the transaxle, or something in the wiring or ECU.
IIRC, either my '81 Civic or my '76 Chevette could be started without depressing the clutch. I can't recall exactly.

My folk's 06 Fusion can be started with it in gear and without the clutch in, I found this out unfortunately one day. Lol
Luckily it was on gravel with the ebrake on, so all it did was spin the wheels then stall. Was 16 didn't have my license yet, was just turning the car on to warm it up while waiting on my folks, at the time I had little knowledge of how a clutch worked.

With the cheapo one I put in the Matrix you arm it with the vehicle running, it stays running when you pull the key and once you're out of the car it shuts the ignition off.

I hit a button on a key fob to start my car, from 50 feet away, usually without any pants on. But the most effective way for the engineers who designed the remote starter to ensure my car is not in gear when I do so is to leave the car running without me in it when I park it for the night, and then shut it off after I walk away from it. It also disables itself if a door is opened between the fully clothed automated shutoff and the pants-free automated startup because of the potential for it to go into gear at that time, which admittedly is kind of a pain, but less of a pain than dealing with a runaway station wagon.Last edited by Tommychu; 10-13-2012, 11:40 PM.

take the plug hooked in to the clutch pedal and unplug it, make a little loop using some 1/4" male termanals and plug them in to the harness... this will make the car "think" the clutch is allways in... and the best part is that its not forever, if you ever decide you dont want it that way any more, just take out the jumper harness and plug the plug back in... no damage done... make sure you tape up over the connector as there will be exposed metal on the termanals and could ground out on something... better safe than sorry...
O and remember, check to make sure your in "N" befor you start your car...

A long time ago, I read somewhere if you're stranded on the train tracks, with a train coming, and your car won't start, you could put the car in 1st gear and crank it over, allowing the starter motor to move the car the short distance off the tracks.
I think that examining this one rare situation, along with any others, still fails to provide a really good reason for disabling the clutch safety switch.

Like I said before, I want to disable the clutch switch in order to be able to install a remote start. I've been driving manual cars since I was 14, and I've only ever forgot to depress the clutch once, (none of my cars besides the Festiva have the safety switch). I'm not worried about running over somebody, or hitting a garage, another car, etc. Besides, once I do install the remote start, the car will always be left in neutral. On the rare occasion that the car is not in neutral, the E-brake will always be engaged, and the car won't move but an inch at max.

You could place a toggle switch on the dash and wire it to both lines on the clutch switch. Then it also doubles as a remote start disable switch.
As far as the railroad tracks situation goes, I've always just reached down and pressed the clutch switch with my thumb.
