I entered a production car trial here in the UK yesterday.
I'd just obtained some 13" (Suzuki) wheels and fitted new 165/70 remoulds. The car was doing well and I had more grip than I'd ever experienced before despite the wet weather (nowhere near as bad as your East coast).
Unfortunately the transmission wasn't up to it.
Towards the end of the event I went to pull away and the car moved a few feet then stopped. I tried reverse and it did the same. When I got out, the trail of gearbox oil told the story as what was left was dribbling out the bellhousing. Oddly the car then drove afterwards with all gears but the clutch was starting to slip. I got recovered home as I didn't think it would be a good idea to drive the twenty-odd miles with no gearbox oil, a slipping clutch and a transmission that may decide to lock again.
I'd noticed a bit of rumbling on the way to the event that I thought could be the start of a wheel bearing on its way out. There was no loud noises before the problem and only a little louder after (could've been just lack of oil). It would seem I've knocked a hole between the oily side of the gearbox/diff and the clutch.
Anyone any experience in this area? Is it worth stripping and repairing or should I just fit a scrapyard box and new clutch?
