  • New Festy Owner!!

Well as the title states: I GOT IT. Now I'm sceptical about the title stuff. But, its only because I got burnt with the Z doing the title stuff.
Anyways on to the Initial stuff. Ill post pics of her tomorrow.

    First Drive Home:
It was a 70 mile one way trip. She did well...enough. Not as good on gas as I thought, almost half a tank to get here; but it was a $6 half tank.
At highway speed she seems like she cant take much more (80mph). But she does it exceptionally. There Is no "get up and go" at 65+, but all around its a lot more peppy than I expected from the get-go. I didn't realize how RUDE people are when your in a small car. Cut me off all over the place, rode my bumper even when I was speeding (and I mean I was 10 over in the slow lane). I got a Lot of weird looks getting out of the car at the gas station. I can imagine I looked like I was getting out of a clown car (im 6'6 270lbs).
The steering has me scratching my head: I take it back that there is power steering; at low speed its a bit of a task to turn the wheel, but all my previous cars have been power steering. At higher speed: I cant tell if there is lag when turning to the right, but there is play (maybe) about 17 degrees of lag, when turning right, and 10 degrees to the left. That said: HOLY SHIT, I feel completely confident when attacking corners on the highway. We will see later about attacking corners up in the mountains of Colorado... and Garden Of The Gods. You guys should Google map the later to see how fun the roads are.
Braking is tricky. The brakes are strong...right before you need to come to a complete stop and then that last few feet feel very wimpy. Itll do for now though.
The car overall is showing its age. The paint is NOT fading but there are a crap ton of small scratches and dings. Same with the interior. They will both be repaired. The seats are loose, well at least the drivers side is. I am just gonna put in buckets though. I have no interior overhead lamp. The Hud lights seem dim, but they work. Ill be putting in new bulbs.

There are brand new Motorcraft Ford sparkplugs in the side pockets on the door... I might just keep those for novelty.

Glad you got it! I didn't want to tell you straight up it didn't have power steering, but I was pretty sure. You even got side pockets on your doors! VERY cool!

      Ok lets talk maintenance.
I will probably do a full tune up just so I know its done.
What oil do you guys use?
suggested spark plugs? I am an import guy so I'm used to NGK's, but I hear they are not so good for domestics. Anyone experiment with Gap? on the Z's if we over-gap we see at least a 7mpg increased and a significantly better base idle. That's baseline for all Z's that have done it so far.
Ride quality is good for what it is. Lots of rattles and some cold air coming in, but I figure If I do the old trick of spraying foam into the doors and panels (into the metal) it will help some. I'm definitely not used to all the cabin noise, but I will get used to it.
What kind of chassis bracing is available for our Festivas? If none: would you guys be interested if I had some made? I'm talking the full round. strut tower, rear upper and lower, and probably an undercarriage brace for those of you who autocross. Maybe a brace for the engine and bay as well.
Ill be doing some talking with my "power-adder" guy. He builds superchargers for experimental aircraft, and random cars that he fancys.
I hear the b3 has a pretty good withstanding to forced induction. I also read that the trans was a weak point; but the auto is more forgiving than the manual. What do you boosted B3 guys do to overcome this? more questions later!

I have a couple Escort Dome lights that make nice replacements for the stock one.

Here's a link to the filter. I also suggest replacing the PCV, located on top of the left side of the valve cover. Here's a link for a PCV. New spark plugs might help, and NKG copper works best. You'll want to gap them to .040 if they're not already. Here's a link for NKG spark plugs. Here's a link for spark plug wires. You'll do well to pull the distributor cap off and check (clean?) the connections too. You might also want to check the small hose to the right of the valve cover where the thermostat housing is that curves back around to the hard tubing, which I believe is called a thermostat bypass hose. I'm not sure what kind of hose is best to replace that one with. As far as oil, you'll want 3.6l of 5w30 oil. Here's a link to the filter you need. Replacing the fusable links (the three loops on the driver's side strut tower behind the battery) with long-legged cartridge (PAL) fuses at 30A, 40A, and 30A left to right respectively will ensure you're not going to have any issues with old connections and new components. 30 PAL link. 40 PAL link. I suggest you clean the connections (disconnect the battery ) before sliding the new cartridges on, and maybe use some connectivity grease to ensure a great connection.
          This might help.

Nice find! Sounds like you need the Aspire brake swap. Bigger better brakes that basically bolt right on. If your adding power, definitely do the brakes first. Might want to watch out with the French on here.

@TheresGabe: "You cannot fill an already full cup". I emptied my cup when I joined. I have NO knowledge of Festiva workings so I can only guess and assume at this point. In short: Teach away my friend, teach away!

@DriverOne: AWESOME!! Any more little tidbits?

@David88: I'm looking at aspire stuff as we speak. Also checking into a hybrid system.

First thing to know: THIS CAR IS NOT A DOMESTIC! It's the least domestic car EVER! It's Mazda parts assembled by Kia in Korea. It was produced as a Mazda 121, a Kia Pride, and continues now in Iran to be produced as a Saipa Nasim! NOTHING American about this car.

plugs, wires, filters... Then work to bearings, Lower Control arms (trust us, you probably need them), tie rod ends, etc. People will say that you should aspire brake swap right off, but you don't REALLY need to. The car isn't very heavy.

If you have worked on other cars, the festiva is going to be a piece of cake!

Never heard the idea that the auto is more stout than the manual. Driving an automatic festiva defeats the entire fun experience! Good luck!

That doesn't add up... a full tank is 10 gallons. If you went 70 miles and it cost you $6 then you were getting 40+ mpg. Unless I am missing something... 5 gallons would be a half tank and be more like $17

If you did get 40+ then you are doing just fine! Or I miss read your information :p
Most of your questions have been asked before and can be found all over the site! There is a lot to read! Doing what driver one said is a good start.

@Charlie: Hahaha, it just kicked in that I made it home on almost 2 gallons of gas.........I think I just got caught up watching the gas gauge fall.

@TheresGabe: Again, I stand corrected. your on a roll. I stopped at "ford" and just didn't realize.

No tittle issues with the Festi (haven't registered as of yet).
With the Z: they said the second owner signed it wrong. then they made me jump through a crap ton of hoops. I had to pay $20 because I sign my name "Greg" and my I.D. says "Gregory". I was standing right in front of the person when I signed BOTH DOCUMENTS AT THE SAME TIME. They neglected to tell me this.
