  • cooling fan

does anyone else disconnect their cooling fan in the winter? I do because it takes way too long to warm up. With the cooling fan unplugged the temp guage never goes past the middle, but gives me a great ammount of heat i love it.

That is as high as mine gets while the cooling fan is plugged in. In the last two months I have maybe had my cooling fan kick on twice, and that was on very warm days (Warm for this time of the year).
It only kicks on when needed, so there is zero point in unplugging it.

Cooling fans are really only needed if the car is sitting idle for extended periods of time, like traffic jams and stop lights. Since it is cold outside now, it rarely kicks on for me.

Cooling fan shouldn't even pop on in winter unless you are in some serious traffic.

If you're going to unplug the fan make sure to do so at the radiator and not at the thermosensor plug near the thermostat housing. Because if you do do this you won't be able to turn the fan off!

my fan is hardwired meant to hook it to a switch, but havent had the time. Someone cut the plug before i got the car.

Mine runs randomly. Almost always kicks on when needed, but it's also on right at starting and seemingly random here and there. I replaced the fan switch last year and I guess it went bad again...

Despite our fairly warm winter so far, I rarely get to normal temperatures when moving.

That is practicably over heating in Bruce! As soon as it lifts off the yellow line I get plenty of heat.

When you set your heater control to Defrost position the AC compressor (if equipped) is engaged to dehumidify the air and clear your windshield. Whenever the AC comppressor is engaged the cooling fan operates. Could this be your random operation? We can test your switch, no need to throw parts at it.

I don't have A/C. I just removed the cooling fan fuse this winter. We've warmed back up so I put it back in.

You must address the root cause of the problem. I am willing to bet the fins on your heater core are plugged with dirt and debris or plugged up inside. The fan is there to prevent the engine from overheating. It should be toasty warm in the Festiva with the temp gage at the midpoint. The first warm day, I would make some adapters to hook up a garden hose to the heater core lines. Flush the block out. and the heater core by running water in both directions through each of them (all four, block + heater core) back and forth until the water is running strong and clear. If there isn't much gunk there, then it's time to remove your dash and clean up over twenty years of dirt on the outside of your heater core fins. Read my post on "cabin air filter". If you keep heating your engine up that high, something else will get damaged. Good luck.
