  • Hmm... Should I get back into the Aspire game...

I never did love my Aspires the way I have always loved my Festivas.

I've been looking for another Festiva to DD, and have found NOTHING in months locally. The this little car pops up.

He said there isn't any rust, and it should pass safety and emissions inspections no problem. It's an ATX, if it were a 5-speed, I'd not even have hesitated... I'll bet he'll take $400.

    Thoughts?

With that many miles the ball joints have been replaced, probably a few times..so worst case a steering rack replacement... Easily worth it. I always hated autos, but I really do like my 97 auto. If you got the cash, jump on it! You just have to wonder how much longer that engine and transmission will hold up, so I would be on the lookout for both to have on hand as a spare, and swap both out at the same time when either dies...cheap car that's easy to work on...do it.

so automatic versions of the aspire are gutless. add that to the fact it has 242,000miles driven, and you dont know how they maintained it. i wouldnt get it. my last 95 aspire was meticulously maintained synthetic oils always, and maintenance stuff, and around 200-250,000+ miles. it started losing its pep. not only that but that whole thread about these engines losing their capacity to blow warm air as they get older, as talked about in the thermostat thread. i personally would wait for a better one. dont set yourself up to be disssappointed get a 5spd at least.
      Running 40psi.....in my tires.

Hmmm... The miles and the work isn't really a hesitation. I've owned 5 festivas, and a 2-door automatic Aspire, as well a 4-door Manual Aspire... Maybe I'll buy it, clean it up, and flip it for some cash.

Gutless is relative, you can't tell me a (stock) 5 speed is fast. A clean body is worth a little, and that one still moves under its own power. I don't know how you could be disappointed with a clean 400$ car.

I actually never had any super gutless problems with my ATX Aspire. The fact that you are in top gear after 40mph unless you push it, is a little bit of an issue. The 30mpg vs. 40mpg is a BIG issue

He won't go below $450. I just can't do it for an ATX Aspire.

I don't know, I still think $450 is a good buy on a car without a lot of rust, and that you think will pass state inspection.

Usually, the reason that a car sells that cheap is because the PO KNOWS that it won't pass inspection (crack in the windshield, needs entire steering assembly, etc). At $450 and a set of tires, even if you only got 20,000 miles out of it, it's still worth it ....
