  • how much?

would you pay for a b6?
there is one in the junkyard by my work, but they want 200 plus a core charge.
I hope to find one cheaper if i can?
Do you think its worth the 200 or is that on the expensive side?

I'd give $200 in heartbeat, around here if your lucky you'll find one and they want $350+. The last one I asked about they said $500

Well at the pull-a-part near me a 4 cylinder engine is about $120. But that doesn't mean that it's a good motor either.
So if they guarantee it and it doesn't have a ton of miles then i'd says it's worth it

Beauty and value is in the eye of the beholder. A thoroughly 'bagged' engine is worth virtually nothing whereas a fully complete, carefully maintained and known history lo-miler, that has been professionally removed and storage prepared, ought to be worth a grand. Most junkyard engines come with a 30 day guarantee, too. But that doesn't compensate you for your time if it turns out to be a lemon. Ordinary B6s have less value than a 16 valve OHC, which have considerably less value than a DOHC version.

Depends on how much the core charge is. A good, rebuildable core is worth $100. You can do a fairly complete rebuild (not just rings, besrings & gaskets) for around $700. I paid $200 for my b6, which they said ran good, but I ended up doing a complete rebuild anyway.

I paid $150 for my B6. I had an engine shop, tank it, bore it, valve job and assemble the block and cylinder head. I put the major pieces together myself. I have the tools and engine stand. Just too lazy to do the whole job myself.

Far as I am concerned, any engine that hasnt had compression test and hot idle oil pressure test is just core engine. Such tests having been done are worth a premium price on the used engine. A good salvage yard will do these tests before pulling an engine if at all possible, and also keep accurate record of the miles on odometer. Course engine from modern front crashed car cant be run without far too much labor, but still....

I remember back in the day, one crusty old junkyard guy I knew would start carb engine just setting by itself on its oil pan in muddy lot. Cast iron engine can run for little while without damage with no cooling system hooked up. I wouldnt try that with modern delicate aluminum engines even if it were possible.
