The only 4 speed Festivas were in '88 and '89. During those years the LX could be had with a 5 speed and in '89 it could be had with an automatic and FI. The manuals were all carbed.

In 1990 all Festivas became FI, and the only manual offered was the 5 speed.

If you have a 4 speed later than '89, it's been put in as a replacement.

In the US the 5 speed manual and the 3 speed automatic became the only transmission choices starting in 1990.

Go here to learn all about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Festiva

        Like Karl said^^

The 4 speeds will mate with the 90+ models. So it's possible to run accross a 93 with a 4 speed. It just means someone put in the 4 speed rather than find a 5 speed. I'd stick with 5 speed myself.

Previous posts are all correct. Take a look at the shift knob while you're at it! Festy owners are known to be cheap and a used $50 4 speed usually takes precedence over a $250 5-speed when a cheapskate is at the wrecker. Especially if it's his wife's car, and she never enjoyed stick shifts anyway.
