  • the wheels on the bus go round and round: wheel bearing brands and what is good/best?

Just curious to know what are brands of wheel bearings that are reasonable/esquisite for moderate to high speed driving and cornering as my front left has gone and have decided to change all of them at once to save the issue of doing them all later.

Is there also any brands to avoid at the sake of safety and an unreasonable wear period?

Also, would anyone recommend / avoid eBay brands at all and what brands would they be?

    Btw I have a 1991 festiva.
    Thanks

What kind of grease do you suggest when you pack old or new bearings?

I have been using the yellow packet of grease you can get at autozone.

Between 4K-5K miles with that stuff on Timken rear bearings, working great so far.

I've always used the moly fortified grease. It has a higher temperature tolerance than standard lithium grease. It's "ford, lincoln, mercury" specfic grease.

TImkens... think I saw them on eBay for like 7 bucks a wheel. Grease I'll get locally, what are the recommendations?

I'll let you know if anything changes before i need them.

Are you in need of all the bearings and seal all around? There is a store that carries them locally here.

Timkens are good bearings. To be honest, NTN and Koyo are also very good. In fact, all three make bearings for each other, depending on the market supply and demand. Ive been in the Bearing and PT business for 20 years, and Koyo tapered roller bearings would probably be my first choice. The steel they use is top grade, and their machining, fit and surface finish is probably the best in the industry. The main thing when greasing them is to not over grease and pack them full. This will cause the rollers to slide and lead to premature failure.

yeah, it turns out, those bearings i saw on ebay for like 7 bucks a set was actually price + $45 shipping to australia.. so yeah for every bearing (if combined shipping isnt available) is that..

could you get me a quote for a complete set (all 4 Wheels) and have them weighed and see what the postage would be on the package, if it's not putting you out of course.

i think getting everything at once would be a lot easier and i was quoted locally for everything i was advised as a kit for all 4 wheels was $115.25.

if it's under that, i'm definitely going the shop overseas option.. man we get reamed locally sometimes.

i found the tubs of bearing grease for like 10 bucks too.

blkfordsedan made a mention of these other two brands:- NTN and KOYO. according to them, they make bearings for each other when the need calls.

could i get you to check the three to see what works out cheapest as mailing should be the same as they most likely will all weigh the same.

i know its a PITA, but it would help out a lot.

I can get the Timken stuff locally as well.

Cheapest I can get them to ME is $75 shipped for everything. Assuming your car is a manual and not a GL (GL's supposedly have something different going on)

I'll have to grab my shipping scale and head to AutoZone to see what shipping weight will be. Shouldn't be too bad I'd imagine.

awesome.. if it tips the scales at under 115.25$ you go it.

my car is 1991 Ford Festiva 5 speed manual.. (i really haven't identified the model of Festiva i have, but i don't think i'll have a problem.)
