  • How to Unlock a Festiva Using a Coat Hanger

It was a lot easier than I thought!

Locked my keys in my car yesterday and couldn't find my spare...don't ask where it ended up being!

Found a video online about how to unlock a car with a coat hanger and thought I'd give it a try. I was in it in less than 30 seconds. Thought I'd make my own video to let you guys see just how easy it was...my second time ever attempting it and I had it unlocked in 15 seconds.

He may be insenuating that he keeps on in there so he can "help" other people get into their cars!

I keep a spare key in a "HIDE A KEY" box hidden up under my car. Before getting a couple spare keys made I used some 1" wide metal banding (from a pallet at work) to pop the lock. If you go further out towards the back of the car. It's the push down side of the lock.

The drawback to magnetic "hide a key" boxes is they rot away and fall out right around about the same time you really need to find it. Over the years I have found 3-4 of these thin steel boxes (ruined mind you) at the side of the road plus a few plastic ones that had parted company from the magnet.
Easiest is to attach a spare key somewhere accessible but out of sight and with a sheet metal screw. I've been doing this for years since I always carry a Swiss knife (ie screwdriver) in my pocket. For anyone else it is still a lot easier to come up with a screwdriver, pliers or coin than it is to start looking around for, and fussing with coat hangers.
Festys have what appears to be a locking gas cap. Unbeknownst to most people these readily pop open, with no real damage, through minor application of force and a spare key is easy to hide in there with a string, wire or screw.

I've been popping the lock with hangers on mine since 98. If not careful you can damage it, tho it took a while and a lot of lock outs here.

I once did it with a drinking straw I found on the ground in the parking lot I was stuck in. One of those fat sturdy ones that come in milkshakes. Flattened it out and open she came.
Any difference that makes no difference is no difference.

If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?

The straw and paper clip are impressive! I'd like to see that on video!

Wish I would have known that too before I ruined one of my good metal hangers!

Time to buy a Viper security alarm and hook it up between the door switches and the lights amd the horn.

I was admiring this toolbox lock yesterday.

Somebody told me a rock would help. Later I found out he meant to break a window.

Nice shot! I wonder if someone managed to scavenge the suspension (well, maybe not the springs) off this before it became part of someone's landscape feature. It is/was an Aspire, No?
