  • g5mr or g25mr.. that is the question?

What is the better out of the two transmissions?

Was curious to know if the G5MR was a better transmission to swap with the Ford Capri XR2 B6? Does this combination work at all?

G5mr is cable and g25mr is hydro. The G5mr will be easier to mount, while the g25mr requires small cutting of the tranny housing and oil pan. The mounts will be different and you will need a mechanism for engaging and disengaging the clutch.

Also the g25mr final drive is taller.

G25 hydro has a stronger case and is more redily avilable.

So which cars had the g25mr or g5mr in stock form?
Obviously the xr2 had the g5mr as its cable. Or did they come out with both?

G25MR is a G5MR with the updated synchros. Has nothing to do with cable/hydro clutch actuation. I don't think the cases are any stronger/weaker, either

is there any size difference in the transmissions themselves? as in is one longer than the other?

here is some information about where to find one of the G5MR's and which cars.

here is the info, for anyone that doesn't want it all (there is a complete thread at the link)

Due to the numerous people blowing transmissions and thinking of
adapting a G25M-R to replace the worthless fester trans I figured I'd
post what I know about this transaxle. (FWD applications only)

The G series Mazda transmission has been around since 1987 with the
introduction of the B6-DET powered 323 GT (and possibly earlier) and
has 3 names that I know of for FWD applications: G5M-R, G15M-R and
G25M-R. It is hard to say which cars had which transaxle, but it
really doesn't matter as the differences between the tranny codes are
unknown anyways. I know this because the 90-91 Protege LX has a G5M-
                    R, while the 92-94's have a G25M-R. I own a 90 Protege right now and
there is not a bit of difference between it and my 93' Protege's
transmission, bellhousing shape or otherwise. According to mazda
specs, the gear ratios are identical as well.

Here is a list of the cars that have FWD G series transaxles:

                    -87 323 GT
                    -90-94 Protege LX
                    -91-94 Capri XR2
-91-96 Escort GT, LX-E and Tracer LTS
                    -92-94 MX3 GS
                    -93-97 Probe GT / MX6 LS / 626 ES
                    -95-98 Protege ES
                    -97+ Kia Sephia
                    -99+ Protege ES
                    -01+ Protege LX 2.0
                    -02+ Protege (all models)
                    -02+ Protege5
                    -01 MP3
                    -03 Mazdaspeed Protege (with LSD)

There might be a couple cars that i missed (kia's most likely) but
this is basically where you can get this transmission.

As for fitting it to a B6T, B6, B3 or BP, you will need to retain you
cable-operated clutch, and the only way to do this with any of these
                    transmissions is to either:

1: buy a cable-op G series transmission from the only two cars that
have it: Capri XR2 or 323 GT
2: Swap bellhousings from the Capri XR2 or 323 GT with any of the
                    above

Now as for gear ratios, they all vary from car to car, but while I
don't have the exact ratios, I know this much for certain:

-87 323 GT and Capri XR2 likely have same gear ratios, which are
quite long (a guy i know with a XR2 says it drives at ~2750 at 60mph)

-90-94 Protege LX transmission has same ratios as 92-94 MX3 GS which
are the shortest ratios you can get with the G series (in 5th, 60mph
                    at 3000rpm)

-91-96 Escorts and Tracers with BP have same ratios as Protege LX /
MX3 GS BUT their 5th gear is longer, which is MUCH nicer for highway
                    driving

-93-97 Probe has shortest gear ratios of the MX6 and 626, the MX6 /
626 has VERY long ratios that are identical in either car. (in 5th,
                    60mph at ~2650rpm)

-99+ Protege's have pretty short ratios, not quite as short as the
                    Protege LX / MX3's but close (~2900rpm at 60mph)

I'm unsure of the ratio differences between the kias, 2nd gen Protege
and the mazdaspeed protege's, but you get the idea.

my other question is, can the gear ratio's from these transmissions be combined to create the "ultimate" ratio?

I found some of the ratios for some g series transmission's:-

mazdaspeed protege (2nd generation g series, 28 spline)
                    1: 3.307:1
                    2: 1.842:1
                    3: 1.310:1
                    4: 0.970:1
                    5: 0.755:1
                    R:
                    Final drive : 4.105:1
Differential: Conical ring torque-sensing limited slip

                    99-2003 Ford Zx2 (1st Gen G series, 26 spline)
                    1: 3.30
                    2: 1.83
                    3: 1.31
                    4: 0.97
                    5: 0.75
                    R:
                    Final Drive: 4.10
                    Differential: Open

                    98 Escort Sedan (1st Gen G series, 26 spline)
                    1:3.31
                    2: 1.83
                    3: 1.23
                    4: 0.91
                    5: 0.79
                    R:
                    Final Drive: 3.85
                    Differential: Open

if you want to add to this.. please feel free.
