This has been played with for years but like direct injection the technology to make it durable and lightweight is only now becoming possible. The extreme benefits are irrefutable with the lone exception of durability.
The first printable pistol was fired today successfully. How far away is it that we can select our engines and other options for our car and print the parts to assemble?
The government will supply the computer with legal software loaded. Detectable malfunctions or illegal alterations transmitted at every stoplight. Our new vehicle is otherwise printed. Robotics assemble the parts as instructed in the purchased download. Any variation from the downloaded script would require factory and government intervention to complete assembly until the final assembly passes all tests and allows you to purchase current tags for use. The last hurrah for car dealers will be having this technology for a few years before all people desiring non-public transportation are purchasing the same equipment to print all purchases. No more retail, just big guv and factory think tanks owning the intellectual rights and responsibilities of your purchase, car, refrigerator, clock, glock whatever!!

I designed something like this years ago on paper, before I had any ability to physically make things. Oh well. That square lift profile means HUGE things for power and efficiency. Excited to see this become a consumer item

Printing all those parts..for guns , just download the recipe and print. But for car stuff if somebody comes up with an awesome new intake manifold design it can be printed, tested and shared or sold very quickly. Internal engine parts have already been tested that are made of "plastic" and coated with material to resist heat and wear. Printing a cylinder head that would accept computer actuated valves is not too far from reality. Apparently you can lease the $8,000 and up printers long enough for a production run, and if you are successful you can lease more!
Lets see, design a bottom end entirely out of plastic but use sealed bearings so that no oil is needed. Have direct injection that contains just enough lube to seal the ringless pistons that no longer need huge piston to bore clearances and energy robbing ring friction. Computer control could switch from 2 stroke to 4 stroke as needed for power or economy out of a small cc package. RPM's could vary from high torque low rpm to a 20,000rpm wail for power! Printable mufflers with moving internals can customize the the sound to your liking, different tunes for engine and exhaust installed at will from your smart phone...the same phone that downloaded your new engine and controlled the printer that prints it!

Pneumatically operated valves have been used in Formula 1 racing cars for some years, but after the debacle at Indianapolis some years ago you Americans are not too keen on the genre.
pneumatic valve springs are still cam actuated. None of this is a new idea but using this technology with durability suitable for a production car is the line we need to cross. As far as Indy are you referring to that huge turbo engined mercedes? lol
