fuel strainer question

What is the difference between the fuel strainer in an Aspire vs. a Festiva fuel strainer?
Are they interchangeable?
Are the fuel pumps that different?
I have seen squares and rectangle (both longitudinal and transverse) replacements.

I had to curse a blue streak upon discovering that OEM pumps are not available anymore and have been replaced by some other concoction that requires retrofitting. Used to be the fuel strainer was a separate issue and not required to keep the pump housing in place. I never did open up either gas tank in the two 5 door Aspires that I purchased for parts and they're now long gone.
