  • gas guage not guaging? right

i was just wondering if a lot of people have a problem w/ their festiva gas gauge not showing what it is suppose to. i've seen in a few posts w/ people mentioning it but was wondering if it is a common thing. mine seems to be normal other than as the car warms up the gauge goes up almost an 1/8th of a tank but seems to be right on. mine isn't actually empty until there is a space between the needle and the E line(needle below the line) and then it still has a little more left. is the gauge based on a float?

My gauge always shows low in the morning when it is cooler, later in the day as the outside temp rises the gauge goes higher , temp/ pressure builds in the tank.
Before I put in the tach dash ,I would be close to E ,and it only take 6.5 gal to fill.
I have had the sender out enough time ,it may have been bumped around a few times ?

usually when i'm on E it'll take 8.5 - 9 gallons but i do have a small dent in the bottom of the gas tank. i bottomed out once and a rock put a small dent and a hole in the gas tank. nothing a little jv weld and a screw couldn't fix though.

          gas tank float sensor

The wires in the sensor wear through. It is common. I have a good one for a 90 - 93. I am waiting for payment on a good on for an 88 - 89. If it doesn't sell I have it for sale too. EASY swap. flip and fold the seat forward, Pop the carpet loose, unscrew about 10 phillips head bolts and lift out the old sensor, unplug the plug, then reverse the procedure.
