Read through quite a few posts but haven't really got a good answer if it'll kill it or not! Got a free tow bar from my grandpa this weekend. So if I try to flat-tow the auto Festiva just how long will it last? Any bets? I have another transmission if it kills it. Not planning on towing over 4 hours and stopping every 1.5 hours. I guess I could let it idle.

Hmmm...could drain the fluid and remove the half shafts? Too much work?

Renting one should only be like 60 bucks for a day...

..forgot you had the camper and are probably wanting a dolly to own...not just needing it to transport a Festy one time.

Think you can undo the axle nut, remove the pinch nut/bolt and can remove the axle, which will immediately drain the tranny.
You MUST have a nut and bolt, or better, a set of outer axle shafts (bolted in place) to hold the hub together!
Otherwise, they will self disassemble in a very short time, like 10's of feet.

At idle the volume of fluid is insufficient to lubricate the tranny while the wheels are driving the tranny at an RPM much higher than what it sees at idel.
I thought this was a good idea too, till it was explained.'93 Blue 5spd 230K(down for clutch and overall maintanence)

^Why couldn't you start it up, put in in neutral, and adjust the idle to an RPM that it would see if it was driving? Or maybe a bit lower than that since(I would assume) the trans would have less stress on it than if it were actually transferring power.
Might pull the plug on the IAC while you're at it in case the PCM get's freaky on you, but still very easy to do.Last edited by sketchman; 07-11-2013, 11:52 AM.Any difference that makes no difference is no difference.

Yeah looked at renting one on occasion it defiantly wouldn't be cost effective unfortunately. Can buy one for $700 used it looks like. I'm kinda at a cross roads. We have 4 vehicles.. 04 Escape, 02 Focus, Festiva and the RV.. and only 2 drivers which 1 is a stay at home mom. Can't part with the first 2 and the last the Festiva is the odd ball. Other than keeping it around nolgastic reasons that's about it. Decision decisions...91 rusty Festiva 260k

I have seen dolly's that you drive the front wheels onto the dolly, and tow that way. The front wheels are not on the ground, and not spinning.
I would go that route if I wanted to tow an auto car.Dan

Manual trans swap it? Probably can do that for cheaper than buying a dolly.Any difference that makes no difference is no difference.
