  • Two F trans - which is which?

    Hello FF people,

I got these two F series transmission. The bigger one comes out of an 92 Protege and the smaller one, I don't know.
The bell housing is the same even though some bolt holes on the smaller transmission aren't there on top.

The main difference is the "thickness" and weight. Smaller weights around 15 lbs. less

    I only need a cable F tranny.

Can anyone tell me what's up with the smaller transmission?

Looks like a different design. What makes you think the smaller one is an F? Maybe it's an E?

Could be that one is an F5MR and one is an F25MR. Unfortunately my F trans has gone to a better place so I can't identify. Can you try poking an axle into it to verify it's an F?

The smaller one looks like a 4 speed

IF the bigger one is an F, the smaller one is likely a early 323/tracer unit

I would say 4 speed, since theres no extension cap thing typical of the 5 speeds.

The F axle fits in both of them. I am confused.
I believe the smaller one is an F because 1) the axle fits
                  2) the bell housing on motor side is the same as the other one, so makes it not an E I believe.

The smaller one might be a mid-late 80s 4-speed. Is there 3 sensors on it? The other one would be a early 90s.

How come there's so much of a difference between the two? I'll check for the 3 sensors.

Well the bigger one is hydro, there is a slave cylinder on it, and it is a 5 spd. The smaller is cable and a 4 spd from what I can make out.

Nonamekid got it right on, I believe.

It's not hard to see if it's 4 or 5 speed. Just see if there's 5 or 6 positions on the shifter rod. You'll likely need a prybar to do it though, those detents are kind of tough when you're not using a shift lever.

Wire brush+degrease the corners near the main bolt holes and it should have a part number stamped in a flat spot. That might help us figure out exactly what's up!

                              Ok, I'm set. 4 speed vs 5.
I never thought an additional gear would weight so much.

Do any of you know if they're interchangeable?
I'm planning on putting the small 4 speed on cause it's mucho easier. But if I ever come across a 5 speed w/ cable will my mounts still be good?
