  • Gear ratios.. could this work?

i have just recently helped a mate with buying a SAAB 900s Talladega..

i was thinking, would these gear ratios from his gearbox fit into our E/F/G series.

    here are the ratios

    3.671

    2.098

    1.391

    1.000

    4.021

    2.863

    Who's looking at you, Damkid?

You could have a custom ratio transmission built, but you'd have to pay someone to cut the gears for you. Last I saw PAR made custom gearsets for the g-series on the order of $5000 USD for all 5 or $800 for just a straightcut 3rd (not installed prices)

Gears from a Saab transmission are not going to fit into a mazda transmission

If you search for ratios i found some link to a page where some guy took a second year and flipped it backwards and made it into a supersized overdrive I imagine if you count the teeth and found another gear and welded it backwards you can change another gear as well and it would match if it's all the same trans. Other than that you're out of luck if you don't have enough power in a certain gear all you can do is just continue to increase power. Terrible idea lol

Yes that guy made a super overdrive but couldn't get it to stay together.

^ the machining required to make that gear change hold was cost prohibative, but it can be done.

I was thinking the other day, how hard would it be to add an actual 6th gear to the G-series transmission? I mean the outside cover holds 5th and the reverse synchronizer, it'd be pretty easy to disconnect & remove the reverse sync and put another gear there, could strengthen it with a "handcuff" bearing/collar like the Honda guys. I'd reinforce it like that because it's moving pretty far away from the bearings.

You could use a solenoid to actuate the gear instead of trying to rig a mechanical linkage. make a new extended cover for it to cover everything

having not split a G series, would that mod eliminate use of reverse itself, or just the layshaft speed synchro? also, would that mod nessisarily change the length of the trans or just the size of the cap?

I think reverse would work just fine without it. I'm guessing it would make the end a little longer than it is now I have some gearsets we can study tomorrow

the g15mr has great ratios for everything except long highway trips. I swapped my 5th to the mx6 gear and hate it except on long highway drives. lol.

thanks for the answer.. i'd be still interested to hear about this 6th gear mod / 5th gear swap you guys were talking about here.

pitty that reverse gear would have to be removed, i like the luxury of backing out of parking spaces and not waiting for either someone to tow me out of it or have to push the car in reverse in neutral.

Weak sauce. I drove my neon srt-4 with no working clutch effectively for months. A bad design on that particular vehicle==the throwout fork+bearing wears out completely after 15,000 miles. It DID have reverse but you had to shut the car off, put it in reverse, then turn it back on. Anyway pay to play. I'd rock a 6 speed no reverse festiva...any other car, nah.

Plan your attacks; find pull thru spaces. It helps MPG and tire wear too.

Guys, he isn't talking about removing reverse, just removing the part that keeps your gears lined up and keeps from grinding while going into reverse.

I am interested to see where this goes. I was curious about the 6 speed G-series in later mazdas and was wondering if parts of that could be adapted to the old case.

There's discussion on ClubProtege & Mazda247 about MFactory (the Gseries LSD guys) making custom gearsets for the Gseries. Lot of people talking about a lot of different things, but the one thing being tossed around a lot is a custom ratio 5th gear... something in .6xx lower than the .717 that's readily available
