165/60/14, or 185/55/14. the first size is easier to find.

I found Nokian Hakkapeliitta all-weather 155/65-14s in the clearance bin of my local tire shop. Apparently these are European sizes that are not common over on this side of the pond. Anyway they weren't expensive and sure spruced-up my car, and they roll way smoother at 75mph than anything I ever had in 12s.

X2 on Festyboy's comment. Keeps gear ratios correct, and they are soooo nice.

Bert, if you still have any 12 equipped Festivas, Khumos were always good 12s to me when I used them. Never had a belt failure or a problem balancing them IIRC. And they were cheap too, but that was 7 years ago now.
Any difference that makes no difference is no difference.

DO NOT run the 175/70s they are too tall and actually have a better chance of rubbing over the 185/55s

Yeah the 175/70-13 is already 7% taller than stock....the 14's have to be 10% or more.

I own a 92 GL with uncut Rio struts up front and Aspire rear struts with festiva front springs on the back, I have used 195/60/14's and right now I have bought and installed 185/60/14's the handling is good and the ride is also good. Good luck with your choice, oh by the way I do use 1/4" wheel spacers on the rear. good luck with your choice.

"but that was 7 years ago now" Entirely agree with you there. I still have one 12-shod Festy but the Aspire swap goodies are all in place and on standby and I mostly gave away (to WmWatt) all the brand new Goodyear 12 snows and misc spares I'd gathered up over the years. Those snows track great but they're still junk. 12s were meant for golf carts, wheelbarrows and utility trailers and the quality (I did have a set of Kumhos at one time) was never there to begin with. Roll on the freeway with a set of modern/premium tires and you'll think there was something right with your old car for a change.
Curious though that for every inch in diameter increase of tires the price doubles. Beware buying into lo-profile 15's!
145/80-12s are still $35 at Canadian Tire in Canada and decent 165/60-14s are 4X that,

How about you call a tire shop and get them to send u pictures of the tires .Then you can call them back and tell them to email you pictures and get an accurate shipping weight of the sealed box.
Then you can let them hold em for a week and call and say you want them and will pay for them tonight when u get home and not another word .
I hate it when people do that .

I am in the process of buying a 1988 festiva and was also wondering about the tire size. Should I upgrade to the Aspire brakes and such? sorry, newbie here.

Best Festy upgrade you can perform. But requires finding a dead or dying Aspire (and/or early Rio front end) first. Wheel bolt pattern is different so don't go jumping on lavish wheels until you've switched.
